is fun. It sounds like it would be really weird, but I feel like I need to tell folks that it makes for a very fun date. DH and I rode the train out to Dijon on Saturday, planning to rent bikes. When we got there, just about every bike in town was rented, except for one huge tandem bike. It took us a few tries to figure out the joint balance/pedaling thing, but it actually ended up being better than if we'd had separate bikes. I am pretty sure DH would have left me in the dust on our 40 km roundtrip ride if we had been on separate bikes, but on a tandem, we had no choice but to find a good pace that suited us both. Plus, we were able to talk the whole time since I was sitting right behind him.
It helped that we had good weather and that the countryside was beautiful, but really, the tandem bike was awesome.

That does sound like fun since DH has the tendency to leave me in the dust, which makes me frustrated and irritated at him - not the makings of a good vacation. I'm glad you had a good time :-)

question: do you have to know how to ride a bike to tandem? I ride. She doesn't. I want to do a tandem, but obviously we can't if it requires both parties to know how to ride it.

Yes, I think you would both have to know how to ride. It's a whole lot harder to be the person in the front, but even in the back, you still have to be able to balance well and coordinate pedaling with the person in the front. I imagine it would be really hard for someone who doesn't ride at all.
I bet DH and I would neve get the pedalling down...but maybe it's something we should try someday. DH is into all things cheesy so I'm sure I could convince him!
My very very very favorite thing in Amsterdam was to see two high as a kite dudes riding a tandem bike. I can totally picture their thought process at the bike rental place.
Stoner A: "Dude...How fucking cool would it be if we got that bicycle built for two?" Stoner 2: "Dude...That would be awesome. Let's go eat some space cakes."
