So we had our dog watched over the weekend by a friend of DH's who boards dogs and wife grooms dogs. They have a few dogs of their own as well. It's the perfect situation. One of them is always home 24/7 as this is the wife's full time job. They don't kennel them and they do everything we do with him at home. They have a large fenced in backyard and tile throughout the house.
This was his first time being boarded since we got him. He was a rescue so im not sure if he was boarded before. He did great with the other dogs and we had taken him here before to socialize with them prior to having him spend the night. However, all the dogs were sleeping in the afternoon and he got up and walked on the back of another sleeping dog. Before the guy could pick him up, his dog snapped and scratched our dog's eye. He screamed and the guy immediately took him to the ER vet. There was no blood and once checked by the vet everything was fine. He does have a very tiny scratch on his eye lid and his eye is slightly red, but it doesn't seem to bother him and he is acting 100% normal.
Also, the next day the 2 dogs played fine with each other as if nothing happened. DH's coworker felt horrible and disciplined his own dog, didn't charge us and made sure that if his dog was sleeping, ours was no where around.
I am happy with how things were handled and this is exactly how I would have reacted had we been just visiting this coworkers house to socialize our dog and had this happen. We are now leaving again for a week this time and I am slightly worried about leaving him at this house again, but I know he also wouldnt get treated and cared about if we took him to a random person's boarding and I do not want to kennel him. It is not an option to take him with us and DH thinks that accidents happen and everything was handled correctly so no point in putting him elsewhere.
This is where the phrase "let sleeping dogs lie" comes from--not all dogs are okay with having their sleep disturbed. Hell, my dogs snap at each other if one wakes the other up. I agree with your DH.
I agree with your DH. Accidents happen, and I would take him there again. IMO, they handled it the right way so I would feel comfortable having my dog there.
