Question for BLW'ers

Does your LO choke and gag? I tried BLW and stopped because it scared me too much. We gave DS an apple slice and he managed to get a chunk off and started choking. Same with sweet potato chunks. I kept jumping off my seat wondering if I should call 911! I stopped and started giving him purees instead. But I'm wondering, is this normal? Will he eventually stop choking on the food? Every time I try I just up and almost have a heart attack!
