I plan to get a second one, no matter h's age. We just have one receiver right now, which is portable. I would guess both it and a new one will end up on my night stand. I like to know what's going on.
We have a video monitor with two cameras. The toddler is more likely to get in trouble so I like to be able to see him if I need to. There is a scanning option, but I keep it on the baby overnight once I know the toddler is asleep.
We only have sound and probably around 9 months shut it off. I could still hear them cry, but not every little noise. The only other time I used it was when we visited the ILs because the guest room was across the condo.

We bought a second monitor for the second kid. The nightstand looks like monitors r' us, but we don't tend to hear them without. Now that they're older, a video monitor with multiple cameras sounds like a great option.

we have angelcare monitors - we used them on DS1 when he was in a toddler bed (he moved out of that when he turned 4)... SO we did get new monitors for the twins (2 of them) but only use one of the sound units in our room for the twin's room, and one for DS1's room.
we still use the sound part for DS1 - he's 5, but we can't hear him when we're in our room, and DH likes to know if he's calling out for us at night, etc (rarely happens anymore, he just comes to our room now)

Yes, we have two sets. Our kids rooms are on the other side of our house. There's a good chance we would not hear our three year old before she started yelling and thus waking up our 10 month old son. We have one receiver for each one in our bedroom.
We never bought a second one. My kids are 32 months apart, but we stopped using monitors around 24 months with both of them. They were in big kid beds by then and had gotten to the point of just coming into our room if they woke up. If for some reason they cry out from their room, we can easily hear them without a monitor. I am sure we would have used monitors for longer if our room wasn't right by theirs.
Was that something you knew when buying it? Do you have to buy the cameras seperately? I need to dig out the manual for ours and see if we have any option like this.
Many of the Summer cameras do.
It was not something we knew. I actually didn't even register for a monitor (we only live in a small apt, so I figured I could hear DS whenever he cried). Someone bought it for us and I am glad they did. It is a summer model.

In that case, I'd just buy a new monitor that can handle multiple rooms. We have one video monitor with two video cameras--one in each kid's bedroom. It toggles back and forth between the rooms all night long.
