I ran the Brooklyn Half Marathon on Saturday. I don't know how I did it, but I kept a 10 minute pace for the whole half!! My previous best was a 2:25, so I hoped for a 2:20 or lower. I anticipated running a 10:30ish pace. The weather was good (warm, but not too hot), the course was relatively flat except for some hills between miles 4-7. I got a good night's sleep the night before, and I guess the stars aligned to let me have an easy run.
As I hit mile 1 and saw that I was just about at 10min, I thought "well, I'm feeling good now, I'm sure I'll slow down later, so why not just keep it going while I can?" I had to make a pit stop after the 5k mark, which due to the line took up 7 minutes, but when I got back running my legs just kept the pace. Around mile 11 I started feeling a bit tired, tried to slow down, but my leg started cramping so I sped back up and sailed in for a 2:17:12 official time!
It's silly, but as I hit mile 12 and realized this was actually happening I started choking up. When I hit the finish I shed a few tears. I felt like such a dork, but I was so proud of myself!
