Patricia Krentcil, the New Jersey woman dubbed the "Tanning Mom" after she was arrested for allegedly taking her young daughter tanning, wants people to know she's not the leather-faced lunatic the media has made her out to be.
"I'm up at 3 in the morning, making sure all the wash is done," Krentcil told the "Today" show from her Nutley home in a taped interview that aired Monday. "My husband goes to work at 4:30, he works from Wall Street. And then I make pancakes, pack their bags, and they're all off and gone. And then I work all day inside and outside of this house."
The 44-year-old mother of five—who pleaded not guilty to child endangerment charges earlier this month—said she did not take her then-5-year-old daughter into a tanning bed with her, as prosecutors claim.
"She never went in," Krentcil said. "She never went in."
Police were called to her daughter's school after the girl complained of a sunburn, but Krentcil says her daughter got the burn while swimming in a pool—not from the City Tropics salon Krentcil frequently visits.
"It was beautiful out, and they went into the kiddie pool," Krentcil said. "She's a redhead. She got sunburnt."
"Every allegation was wrong, and I just want people to leave us alone," she said. "I didn't do anything wrong. Is there something wrong about getting your nails done, or somebody who smokes too much?"
Krentcil added: "I'm sorry, I'm tan. I like to be tan. It just feels good. I really think these moms [criticizing me] need to step off."

If she's telling the truth about the daughter, I don't really care what she does to herself. Honestly, she didn't ask for this publicity- she didn't go on a reality show as the tan character.
I don't remember what prompted the charges against her other than the sunburn. Was it just the assumption that because she was tan that she tried to get her kid to tan?

Is it realistic to think her daughter was in a pool in NJ in April? My parents' pool in south GA is still too cold to use, and it's almost June. That's the only reason I think her story is bogus. This lady is a piece of work either way.

My ginger kid turned pink on me after 30min in the sun before which I slathered a thick layer of ozone on her on Saturday. This certainly seems plausible.
I'm 42 and most of my friends are in the same general age range. If she only knew how horribly OLD she looks. SUre, great, she's tan. But she looks a hell of alot older than 44.

We did have a few unusually hot days here in April, but I don't know of any pool that was open. My ILs just opened theirs this weekend and my parents are opening theirs this week.
ETA: the article says kiddie pool. Probably one of those plastic ones.

It got really warm here for a handful of days and people always freak out the first warm days and run into the water and get burned because they forget. Happens every dang year. I can see it happening to them.
Still, when you have a red-head its pretty much beaten into you that you need the high SPF ALL.THE.TIME on them. Even with my non-red head kid I'd feel hella guilty and judged by all if DD got a burn - though she is somewhat younger.

I wondered about "kiddie pool." You're probably right. Either way, I think the only solution is to put the onus on tanning salons to more closely monitor their patrons so kids cannot get in the booth. You're going to have shitty parents no matter what.

We pulled out our kiddie pool in April and I live in Ohio. We've had some abnormally warm weather. I am quite possibly the whitest person ever (seriously I have trouble finding makeup so light) and I can get a sunburn in 30 minutes especially in the beginning of the season. Even with sunblock I burn in the pool. It's possible.
