We have thick, kind of shag type carpet I guess (it's nice though, not 70s type shag!) and our current vacuum does not seem to be picking everything up, mainly my hair--it's long and falls out some, especially after brushing. I noticed after we took our Christmas tree down that it had trouble getting all the needles too; it took a few times of going over the spot. Our current vacuum is just a cheap Dirt Devil, and I think it's time to upgrade to something more powerful, especially for thick carpet. Any suggestions? I'm hoping to not spend much more than $300 if that's possible.

Hmm, with that price point, I'd stick with a Hoover or Bissell. I'd think, since hair and such is your issue, that a pet-designed vacuum would be a good idea too. Maybe something like this:

I was thinking the same thing, that a vacuum good with pet hair would probably work good. Thanks for the suggestions! Those prices aren't too bad either.

I have the Shark Navigator as well. I Love mine too! It was crazy cheap. We got it at BBB and used a 20% off to make it even cheaper. I think we paid 130ish for it. It has impressed me each and every time I use it! I cannot believe the things it can pick up. I also like that it's light weight, bagless and has attachements with a hose long enough to do all my stairs without having to move the vacuum. We've had it for 2 years now and it is still going strong.
