9 months: Play with dolls Or stuffed animals. Or plastic food. The actual toy doesn’t really matter; what matters is imagination, and props such as toys, stuffed animals and play food have long been used to inspire pretend play. “Starting at around nine months, many babies will enjoy rocking a baby doll or pretending to feed it, or pretending to talk on the phone,” says Jessica McMaken, owner of Razzbelly Early Childhood Consulting Services.
My 9 month is no where near pretending to feed a doll or talk on the phone. I should just unsubscribe from some of these emails. They make me feel like DS is behind when I really don't think he is.
DD was definitely into imitation play at 9 months. I don't know how much "imagination" was involved, but she was interested in doing whatever she saw me do- playing with a computer, flipping through books, etc.
I would have never remembered this off the top of my head, but I blogged about it back in the day:

umm yeah, ds is 11 months and does not do those things.
ETA: He did want to grab books if I was reading them, or pound on my computer keyboard, or grab my phone. But he didn't hold the phone to his ear and talk into it or cradle a doll or anything. He did pick up dolls and smash them over and over on the ground.

Right. This is where DS is. He loves to drop my phone on the ground to make the cover come off.

DD just turned one and just started this type of play. She's been trying to feed her stuffed dog with her sippy and give it her pacifier. But she also likes to throw the puppy in the trash can, so it's certainly not a well refined behavior
DS took the paci out of his mouth the other night, stuck it in mine, then back in his a couple times. that's the only time he's ever done that and doesn't show an interest in anything except when he can make noise with it. he'll be 10 months next week.
Lol. Other than "reading" books, dd didn't do any of this until verrrrrry recently. Yesterday she tried to get her stuffed kitty to eat from the dog's bowl
