I've seen a lot of trash talk about American Airlines on here for the past while. Because of this I was super nervous to fly them during my American legs of my Australia-to-USA flight.
They were not bad at all! On one flight there was something wrong with the aircraft so we couldn't use that one. It only took an hour to get us a new plane, gate and get departed.
I was terrified they'd eff everything up but they were a.o.k. I hope this eases somebody else's mind because I could have used it!
They aren't my favorite airline, but really they are not so bad as everyone makes them out to be. I've probably flown with them the most. For international flights, I find them the same as United.

They're not bad in general, but this recent union issue has made them have a terrible record with on time arrivals which is what concerns me.
When my sister came to visit recently on AA, her flight was perfectly on time, but the one 3 hours prior to hers arrived at the same time she did. That wouldn't bother me for a nonstop flight going on vacation, but the unpredictability is a problem i you need to be somewhere, or if you have connections to make.
H's dad was a pilot for AA so we fly AA most of the time. IMO they aren't the best at getting places on time and they suck for over booking all the time. H and I usually fly business so over booking is hardly an issue for us. We make time for delays and try to NEVER fly through Chicago. Overall, we don't have anything else to complain about so we keep flying with them.
Thanks bejeebus, since I am slated to fly them in a couple of weeks. It was the only airline through which I could book a multi-city trip to the US at reasonable times and decent prices.
I've never really flown them but they had the best rate for a Chicago to SNA flight we're taking in a couple months. After I booked it I started reading too many horror stories that I must have just overlooked earlier. I'm glad there's some positive reviews on here to help ease my mind but I couldn't pass up the rate for nonstop flights.
