I have some from the one time I upgraded to United business, and I just found some in a TAM economy amenity kit. It got me wondering, what the heck are these things for? They're not compression socks, and they're incredibly thin.
Are they just for wearing over your normal socks so that you don't get crumbs or dust on your feet from the plane?
I wear them over the socks I already have on as a second layer since my feet get cold. It also helps I when I walk around a bit, I can do it without putting shoes back on and just peel them off and toss when the flight lands.

This. In fact because British Airways used to always have them in their amenity kits (even in economy) I got so used to them that I now have to bring an extra pair of socks with me just for on plane usage. My feet are always cold on the plane and they obviously also prevent your 'real' socks from touching the pee covered bathroom floor (and of course the dreaded 'plane crumbs' lol)
Speaking of amenity kits, is anyone else an amenity kit hoarder? I have at least 10 in my bathroom cabinet. I don't know what I plan to do with them!?
Since riding boots are the only shoes I wear with socks (other than my running shoes, which I use only to do athletic things in), and I don't always wear my riding boots on the plane (particularly during the warm months), it is nice to have socks to put on so I can take off my shoes while I'm flying. I don't always remember to bring my own socks (because I don't often wear socks).

THIS IS WHY YOU WEAR SHOES TO THE BATHROOM.
I have never understood the socks. They kind of creep me out to wear them alone, something about their texture gives me the chills.
We have tons of lip balms and lotions that came from planes, and my go-to toilet kit is an AA kit that's the perfect size. When I was a kid, my parents both traveled for work, so they'd hoard the kits and give them to a battered women's shelter, which I think is a really good idea since they have some essentials that are useful to people who've had to leave home in a hurry.
Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime. Mark Twain
I'm an amenity kit hoarder. I was actually going through them last night, which is what led to this question. I was trying to figure out what I should do with the socks!
They're such cheap crappy things. Really thin, snagging when I just tried them on, and the only elastic is at the top (which means a single thin tight band around my wide calves). So I threw them out.

This is a great idea! I'll have to do it the next time I get an amenity kit (which is not very often).
I also think it's odd that some people will use airplane bathrooms without shoes. Even an extra sock layer is not enough in my opinion.
Somewhat related - my H travels internationally in business class fairly often, and a few times he's gotten full on pajamas - they're hysterically ugly. He says people get all dolled up in them, so after a while it's an entire section of the plane in matching pajamas. The thought of this never fails to make me giggle.
