I am traveling for work next week to NYC Wed-Thurs. Ideally, I'd like DH to accompany (he can work/remote in from the hotel) and we'll stay from Thurs-Sun.
We'd prefer to stay in Upper West Side/Central Park South/Times Sq area, but all the hotels are $350/night. With taxes/fees, it's costing around $1200! (Granted, they are 4* hotels- Priceline/Hotwire).
Are we able to get a hotel for 3 nights (next Thurs-Sun) in Manhattan for around $200/night? At this rate, we just want something that is clean, nice, and safe. Preferably where we can walk to good restaurants (not Peter Luger, but more mom & pop hidden "gems").
Can you recommend areas and hotels, and if it's even feasible in our price range?
I just did a quick search and it seems like most hotels in Manhattan are all $300 or more. There seem to be some on the cheaper (but still over $200) side near Union Square. Would you consider staying in Hoboken? It's right across the river (the Path train is a few block away) and you can get a decent rate at the W Hotel there.
I have friends who have stayed in the Z hotel in Long Island City, in Queens. It is literally two subway stops from Manhattan on the F line and they used to have a free shuttle into Manhattan (not sure if they still do).
Their rates were super low when they first opened in order to attract business and I found the rooms to be great when I visited my friends. Most had views of Manhattan and there's a nice rooftop bar.
Besides that, when I used to have to book people in Manhattan hotels for work, the only way we got reasonable rates was when we committed to booking a certain number of rooms over a certain period. If your workplace sends people often enough, can you try to negotiate a rate like this?
We went in May and had a hard time finding hotels under $200 also. We found a deal and booked the Milford Hotel in Times Square for a good deal. The star rating is low and I was super nervous but it was clean (just remodeled) and was bigger than the room at the Doubletree we booked. You might consider it since it is right where you want to be. Try Marea at Central Park South for a nice dinner. It is so good! I'm glad I saved money on the hotel and splurged on food.
Have you tried Priceline? H and I stayed at the World Center Hotel next to the 9/11 memorial for $110/night. It's not close to any super *fun* areas but we don't mind walking, cabbing, or taking the subway.
Look into the Westin, Hyatt, Marriott, and Doubletree hotels in Jersey City. The nearby PATH train will get you into Manhattan in about five minutes. (Do not look into any hotels on Tonnelle Avenue in Jersey City. Not only are they not convenient to Manhattan, but they're very shady.)
