It never fails.....HGTV airs a new series, I really enjoy it, but after a few episodes, I see the formula emerge.
For example, Property Brothers and the drama about over budget and/or an unforeseen problem (termites; mold; water damaged sub floors' etc)
Now, on "Love it or List It" they couples get really mad at Hillary the designer because of her budget choices and then they see some other homes they like, but in the end, love the house's redesigned look and decide not to move.....ugh
Are you watching it now? Why on earth are they doing the sunroom? I'm only half paying attention, so she could have said, but I'd have just shut the door on that thing and put the money toward one of the bathrooms.
I've seen two LILI episodes where they've sold. It kinda makes sense since I think it's easier to stay than sell. I find a lot of the families on that show annoying. They seem very unrealistic about what their money will buy and they just complain way too much. I feel like saying "oh, you want fully renovated? be richer!"
is LILI new on hgtv? i think it's a canadian show (i think? i could be wrong.) so i've watched it on a lot of other channels. the formula is the same, but i've seen probably 50/50 who stay vs. move. they are all whiny and fairly out of touch with reality though.
My husband HATES the male host on LILI - he freaks him out. I think they stay more often, but I've definitely seen them sell.
It's nice to see HGTV take on more shows in HCOL areas (e.g., Property Brothers, LILI). I'm sick of seeing palatial estates in Texas w/6 bedrooms and 8 bathrooms for $300K.

I love LILI! I've seen about 50/50 in terms of listing it or loving it, but the show definitely has a formula. The REA always shows them a few busts, but then the last house (which is almost always over budget) is FAAAABULOUS. Then there's ALWAYS a scene where the homeowners are out on the sidewalk talking to each other and are totally pissed because Hillary is cutting something out of their wish list b/c of budgetary reasons. I still enjoy it though. :-)
As I sit and wait for closing on our house, I have become obsessed and enjoy torturing myself with HGTV. LILI is a favorite. It seems like all the HGTV shows have a formula. Not a ton of twists....although yesterday there were a few negotiations for first time home buyers that were a little more complicated. Almost always a formula for drama though.

This. It's an interesting show. I like it, but I think the owners are going to eventually irritate me too much to watch it.

Oh that's funny...mine too. A commercial for LILI came on the other day and he suddenly blurted out "Ugh, I hate that guy." I kinda side-eyed him, especially when he had no reason. Just doens't like him.
Property Brother's really annoys me with the formulaic "OMG, this is a structural wall! goodbye budget!"
Bullshit. If you can't look at the house, and say with a fair amount of certainty that this central wall is probably structural and will cost X to knock out then you have no business calling yourself a contractor. I HATE that crap. They know the walls are structural from the getgo. These things are not always surprises and it annoys me that they pretend they are.
Unless you are in some crazy modern house the location of structural walls is preeeeetty damn easy to pinpoint.

And how on earth do these people buy these old crappy houses on Property Brothers and not have to replace the roof? What are the odds that the roof is in good shape if the rest of the house is a shambles? I HATE that they don't break down the budget. It's such B.S.
Other Property Brothers pet peeve - curb appeal. Ever notice how the outside looks before the big reveal? Pretty crappy. In general, PB homeowners have another $20K in landscaping & exterior work ahead of them.
