Most of the continent is hard water, so it depends HOW hard we're talking about.
Personally, it meant that Rockin Green (both regular and hard rock) gave me repelling issues. Everything else has been fine. I was doing the usual washing routine (cold rinse, hot wash with detergent, 2 cold rinses), but since I switched to soap nuts I dropped the final rinse without any problems.
Repelling means my diapers were leaking like crazy but the inserts were dry. The detergent clogged the fleece. I had to wash with Dawn, and once I switched detergents it was fine.
Rocking Green didn't work FOR ME, but you'll find it's a love it or hate it product. Some people use it for years and it's great. For me, within 2 weeks I had leaky useless diapers. I've use other things (the EFF homemade recipe, soap nuts, Clean B) and everything else works fine for me. Detergent tends to be a bit trial and error.

Thanks for your help. What should I initially wash them with then?
What were you planning on using? Planet, Ecos, and Country Save are all "safe" detergents in stores. Some people like plain Tide Original powder. I like my soap nuts. Just prep them in whatever you plan to use.
I use a half of a capful of Calgon water softener with each load. I use regular free and clear detergent, whatever is on sale-- after trying about 5 "safe" cd detergents. (and Tide gave DD a horrible rash)
Calgon has been the only thing that's saved my diapers. With Calgon, I can basically use any detergent DD isn't allergic to.

I'll look into the calgon. That sounds easy enough. Thanks.

I haven't found that having hard water has changed my wash routine at all, just what detergent I can and can't use.
I have found that regular detergents (especially F&C detergents) create horrible issues with repelling causing leaks. I tried Tide, but DD had an allergic reaction. RnG didn't work for me either. I didn't have repelling but had terrible issues with stink. In the end Tiny Bubbles works great right now, with some RLR and/or Calgon on hand in case a strip is needed.
