"The CDC panel changed the recommendation regarding Tdap vaccinations and pregnant women because pertussis is a disease of close contact. Mothers who are vaccinated while pregnant can also pass antibodies through the placenta wall to their babies to protect them, according to the Los Angeles Times report. "

I thought you were supposed to get one every ten years (pregnant or not)? Every pregnancy seems like overkill if they are close together. I wish it said why.
I think it's the antibodies that cross the placenta that is the drive to vaccinate each pregnancy. The levels would be highest after a fresh exposure/shot, and the newborn phase is the most vulnerable for pertussis.

This is awesome. I'm going to print this out and take it to my doctor.
I asked about whether I should get this shot before I got pregnant and I kind of got a blank look in response. I meant to go ahead and get one (because I thought you couldn't get it while pregnant), but I got pregnant sooner than I thought I would, so I didn't have a chance.

I got one 2 years ago before TTC so I'm not sure if I need another one now. I just transfered my records to this OB, so we'll see what she says. At my 30 week appointment, they said DH & I will get a tdap after I deliver, before we are released.
Thanks for this! I am making a note to ask about this at my OB appointment Monday morning. I had TDaP in 2009, but if I am eligible for another one and a booster will help grant immunity to my baby I am totally willing to put up with that awful sore arm again.
