Good articles about shelters?

FI is writing a paper on homeless pets / pet overpopulation (for a regular college english class, nothing too intense). I know there must be tons of articles out there but we must be searching for all the wrong things because we have only come up with a handful of high quality articles on the subject.

Does anyone have some good resources on subjects like puppy mills, good statistics about euthanasia and adoption rates, etc? Looking for newspaper or journal quality articles, not blog type posts from random websites.
