I mean...it's just different. Different kinds of exercise will yield different results.
CrossFit shoots to make you a great all-around athlete. It works on endurance, speed, agility, flexibility, and strength, and the workouts are programmed to hit all of those skills at some point. The workouts are extremely intense, and everything is done in a group/class setting with coaches watching your form. I've seen gains I never saw with individual weightlifting. For example, when I lifted weights on my own, I could never do more than a 40 pound push press. Now, I can easily do 65 pounds for several reps.
If you enjoy what you're doing and are happy with the results, stick with it. I do CrossFit because I think it's a ton of fun, and I get a great workout.
I think it depends on the box and how you like to work out. I tried it, and wasn't a fan. I've been lifting for years with a trainer, and I didn't like the attitude at the gym I tried (basically, that anything not crossfit is not as good). I've had fantastic strength gains, increase in lean mass, as well as weight loss with my current routine. I also thought price-wise it wasn't worth it.
If you are interested, check it out. Most boxes will do an intro with you to give you a taste of the workouts and/or let you watch some classes. CF definitely isn't for everyone.
If you enjoy it, you'll likely fall head over heels immediately. I'm completely obsessed! That seems to be the general consensus of the people at my box.
If you always put limits on everything you do, physical or anything else, it will spread into your work and into your life. There are no limits. There are only plateaus, and you must not stay there, you must go beyond them. - Bruce Lee

Yeah, same here. I think I'll give another box or two a try before giving up for real, but something about it didn't click with me.
The thing is, I get really competitive and counting down to things and shouting how many you are doing in a group setting is a recipe for me to rush through things in order to get a higher number. I'm worried that my form will suffer and that I could get hurt trying to both hurry and really push myself.
So, it was a great workout, but I didn't fall in love. Like I said, I'm planning on giving another box or two a try, but so far it doesn't seem like it's for me. I really enjoy individual weightlifting and push myself pretty hard on that.
FWIW, I had a really bad experience with a box and was soured on CF for awhile. Eventually I found my box, and it's awesome.
They're kind of like regular gyms in that you sometimes have to try a few before you find one that works for you, you know? They're definitely not all created equal.

Not sure if you tried boxes in Houston, but I *love* my box if you are looking for any recommendations. I also get the trying to do things fast and your form suffering, but for me it's because I'm last a lot, even though I've been doing Crossfit for 2.5 years!
