With LO on the way, Im looking for a better camera so i can capture even all the squirmy stages and faces whether inside w low light or outside. Hoping to spend around 500-600.
So far, ppl have recommended the canon rebel or nikon d3000/3100. Can anyone recommend their camera? Would love to see pics you took if possible too!

I would recommend holding the camera and trying to play around with it for a bit before you buy. The website dpreview.com is great for comparing cameras, in depth reviews, sample photos.
Do you want an SLR or do you want a point and shoot?
Canon and Nikon are both popular. Since I have Minolta lenses, I went with Sony. Just recently upgrade to an A57 and I have been happy with it. However, you would probably not be able to find body and lens in that price range.
You might want to look into The Sony Nex line. My SIL has one and I was playing around with it, seemed like it had some cool features.

We just got a Sony 5n (I think that is what it is called). It's a hybrid between a point and shoot and a dslr. We both love it. It's small enough to be decently portable, but still takes awesome pictures.

I am also planning on buying a new camera soon and have just started my research. FWIW, I really like the looks of the Nikon D3100 so far. I haven't made a decision yet but that's at the top of my list as of now.
I have the Nikon d40 which has been discontinued. I love it though.
Check Costco for deals.
I have this one too as well as a Canon S90 point and shoot which works great in low light. As much as I like the SLR sometimes I want something to put in my pocket. My husband also can't figure out the SLR for the life of me so I stand a better chance of being in focus if I give him the P&S.

DH got me a Nikon D3100 for my birthday. At first I was not sure what to think of it, as it is a DSLR with lots of different settings and things and I had no idea what I was doing, as I had always used a basic point and shoot. But I *love* it. It has an "auto" mode as well as various situation-specific modes (portrait, nighttime, etc.) -- I basically always use those, so it requires little-to-no camera-specific knowledge (although I recently did take a photography basics class so I could start to expand my usage to some of the more manual modes).
Anyway, this thing is SO much better than our point-and-shoot, which was a Nikon Coolpix. The shutter speed is fast, so I catch those split-second facial expresssions (whereas with the P&S it always seemed to have a several second lag) and it has been really good, even on auto mode, of turning out good looking shots (even in our apartment, which typically has low light). But that's probably true for all DSLRs.

I have a Canon Rebel T3, which is the entry level Canon SLR. It's around $500 on Amazon. I've only shot in auto so far, but the pictures are way better than my old Canon point-and-shoot.
