And is it still dark? Do you feel safe?
I live in South Louisiana and it's getting too hot to run during the day. My 2 miles yesterday at noon left me feeling so light headed.
I live in a safe neighborhood so I don't know why I am scared to run when it's still dark. I was up at 5 with the dog this morning and it looked like the sun was just starting to come out so it wasnt pitch black like at night.

I usually leave my house anywhere between 5:30-6:15am, depending on when I have to get to work or what my day is like. The sun here rises around 5:20 so it is fairly light even at 5:30. However there aren't nearly as many people out at 5:30 as there are an hour later (still a good number though - I live in a popular running/walking area).
I've never been scared running early, but I had a somewhat unsettling thing happen last week so I now wear a spibelt so I can bring my phone with me.
Does your dog run with you? Maybe bringing him/her could give you a little feeling of security?

4 a.m. It's definitely still dark. I stick to the streets in my hood, wear a reflective vest and carry pepper spray and my phone. Only once have I ever felt uncomfortable.

with kids 8-9 this depends on when they wake up and get done eating breakfast with out them 7am. I love running at this time it's so nice outside and peaceful.
we usually run at 6 AM, it's light out by then, we wait until it gets to be light out to run since we'd prefer not to be run over by the wackos that drive on base
When I do, I leave around 6:15 and get back at 7:15. It's a little annoying because the sun comes up directly in my face, but the weather is perfect! I also run on a very major (residential) thoroughfare, so I've never felt unsafe. There are a lot of other runners out at that time also.

I'm on the road by 5:30 or 5:45. I don't know if it's rational or not but I feel as though any weirdos won't be up so early. I feel perfectly safe in my neighborhood, but I don't wear headphones and let H know where I am going, just in case!
5:00. I live in a pretty safe area and do see other runners on occasion, but I still sometimes feel creeped out so I bring pepper spray, a reflective vest and my phone with me. It's worth it though - nothing beats empty streets for running! Plus, the sun is rising earlier these days so it hasn't been totally pitch black even at 5:00.
When I run outside during the week before work, I am on the road by 5am. that allows me to get a good 1 hour & 20 minutes in before I need to start getting ready for the day.
I run as its getting light out ESP in the summer here. Right now I go about 620 and try to go earlier and earlier as it keeps getting lighter out. If I wait it gets too hot. Plus I love getting it out if the way for the day! In the fall and winter I go at night since its darker in the AM and by the time it gets light I've run out of time (and need to atart work)to get my whole run in
It depends on 1. what time I have to be at work and 2. if I'm alone. If I have to be at work by 8am and am alone, then 545-6am...but if I don't have to be at work 'til after that (or if I'm off) I go later and if I have company then I'll go earlier.
I wake up at 4:30am and am out the door usually around 4:45. It's still dark at that time, but there are street lights and I feel safe. By the time I am coming home at 5:30-5:45, it is getting light out.
I love it. It's too hot here (Maryland) to run after work.

My routine is different than most - I commute to my office very early, do a little work, and then go out for my run around 7:30 am. I won't run near my house in the dark - I run on a wooded trail and there have been several assaults on female runners, even though it's a busy trail.
I will get up to run at 5 or 5:30 in the spring and fall. In the winter, only with my DH. It creeps me out to run in the dark in the morning.
In the situation you describe, though, I'd be out and running at 5. The sun is starting to come up, so it's getting brighter. It's different when it's dark at 5 and still dark at 6 when you finish the run!
I'm a lurker here, but want to join, normally around 6 am. It's light outside now at this time, but I wouldn't feel unsafe if it were dark. I live in a small town in Switzerland though.
When I lived in Geneva, I felt unsafe running alone at any time. I always ran with my DH or if not, I had pepper spray with me.

5 am. I feel safe. I keep the volume down so I can hear both music and cars. When it is REALLY dark, I wear a reflective vest or shirt. I do feel weird when it is really dark like that because it's like I'm running at 2am. Who does that?
It's dark at that time from October-May so I bring a flashlight with me. I run along mostly major roads so I don't feel too scared. I'm really loving it this time of year b/c the sun is just coming up as I leave. Makes it MUCH easier to get up and out of bed.
