This is in reply to Aurora's comment in the weekend thread.
I just finished it and I liked it. I could relate to so many things in this book that it was kind of ridiculous. Part of her family is from western PA (so am I), she's a runner (so am I), they live in the middle of nowhere and hunt (which is how I grew up). My family drove to Alaska on the Al-Can when I was 12 and we spent a month up there. I have several friends who live in Alaska (one is a commercial fisherlady). Oh, and my family runs a cemetery, so all of the death/obituary stuff was totally relateable for me, too. I suppose normal people might find those parts morbid!
I think the GR reader who described it as "Prairie Home Companion" for Alaska got it pretty right. I might lend it to my dad, despite the fact that he will not agree with the author's politics or religion. She didn't try to sell either, so I think he'll be able to enjoy it. He loves Alaska and would move there in a heartbeat if Mom would let him.
I grew up in Alaska (not anywhere near the author's location), which is why I thought I would like it, but didn't connect with it.
That said, I'm realizing through these discussions that I didn't love a lot of the books I read around this same time span when I was overseas (for work) and lonely, so now I'm starting to wonder if some of it was just me!
