Im an orthopedic PA and have been for 6 years. I basically spend my days and nights in surgery. One of the reasons I chose to be a PA is because unlike a doctor, I can change specialties.
Im looking for a new job and just saw something in hematology/oncology (blood and cancer). it is an interest of mine, but not a surgical position. How do I explain in my cover letter why I'm trying to switch (without saying better hours, more compassion, etc)
I'd emphasize how it's an interest of yours. Have you taken courses in it, dealt with it in your day-to-day, have knowledge of it from your time as an orthopod? If your field allows you to change specialties, is it that big a deal that you don't have direct experience? Are there other requirements that you fit that you can play up in your CL? These are all things I would consider when trying to craft one for this position.
