Does anyone else think that there are prettier wedding dresses out there now, as opposed to when you got married years ago?
I feel like there are so many different, prettier dress options out now than there were 5 years ago when I was shopping. I still think my dress was ok and perfect for me and the type of wedding we had, but I think that I may have chosen something else if there were different options. Maybe it's because I was a David's Bridal shopper
No I think there were thousands of amazing dresses when I got married in 2005. Styles haven't really changed all that much yet, although I do see some different trends I don't think many of the dresses from our wedding dress thread look that much different than the majority of what's out there today.
I do LOVE the trend of lace, and especially lace sleeves since Kate wore it...that is so ladylike to me. If I got married again now, I would probably choose something with lace sleeves.
Maybe it's just me then. I feel like everything I looked at was the typical A-line dress with minor differences. The pickup skirt was big when I was shopping.
I don't know if the dresses are prettier now but I have a tendency to think that all dresses are pretty, so don't ask me.
The one thing I have noticed is that the trend is more towards simple, the elegance is in the plain sort of dress. That was something that wasn't out 7 years ago and was wishing for when I was shopping. Then it was a lot of colored ribbon, those fluffy tufted skirts, sparkles etc. All I really wanted was a plain dress with a bit of lace or tulle. I found one at David's Bridal. In a way it was nice because I was short on time and cheap..so the two options they had had to do..lol. LOL..I'm 5'2" I drown in fluffy, pretty athletic so dainty bows just don't cut it and as you all know I'm pretty no frills anyways! I wanted a party dress that was reasonably comfy!
I still love my dress though. It's pretty timeless when all said and done.

I really haven't looked at any dresses since I got married. I was one of the last of my friends so I really didn't even have other weddings to check out. Overall I did really like mine.
That being said, I hated every minute of wedding planning. I think that there are way too many options out there when it comes to every aspect of planning and it drove me crazy!!!! I hated having to narrow down one dress out of a million or one invitation out of endless options.
Well, I got married almost 2 years ago, and I don't think that there are a bunch prettier dresses out there now, just different styles that are popular. I mean, if I had to go back and do it again, I probably would pick a different dress. That's not to say that I didn't love my dress; I picked it because I thought it was timeless and I wouldn't show my kids my wedding album and have them say, "Mom, oh my God," like I do with my mom's dress. But my tastes have changed a bit since getting married, too.

It's been 5 years (almost) for me too, and I honestly haven't been keeping up with trends that much. But I do think that based on say yes to the dress, styles have changed a little bit towards the more fitting stuff. I'm fortunate that the fitting stuff wasn't quite so popular when I was shopping, because it looked HORRIBLE on me. I'm kind of short and I have big hips, so I wound up just looking like a stuffed sausage in all those options. The ballgown style was much better suited to me.
I think for me the reason I like other dresses better than mine is just because I already wore mine so it's a "been there, done that" thing and now I want to move on to other things :-)

I love looking at wedding dresses and when we got married 6 years ago, I picked something simple so I'm still happy with it. (If you had asked me 3 months before our wedding, I had a panic attack and thought that dress was awful lol.)
I feel like there was more variety 5 or so years ago. You could wear a ballgown, an a-line, a sheath, a mermaid, anything. Like I said in that other post, the ONLY wedding dress I've seen in the past 18 months is a lace mermaid. Enough already! There are other styles of dresses out there! And mermaid is a challenging style to wear for most body types.
Maybe it's just a local problem, but all the weddings I've been to in the last 18 months have been carbon copies of each other: lace mermaid gown + mason jars of wildflowers + twinkle lights over a patio + quirky indie invites.... Apparently there are only 5 ideas floating around on Pinterest for weddings and our friends have all zoomed on them lol.
Hm, I don't pay too much attention now, but when I was shopping 7 years ago I was overwhelmed by all the choices. I can't imagine someone has come up with something totally new since it felt like all the options were covered. I did think DB had the most limited options. I spent maybe 15 mins. in there, but A-line satin wasn't for my body type, and that's about all they had. I ended up with a lace dress, and I remember being mad because my cousin's (now ex, grrr) wore the exact dress with the lace jacket I wanted to wear in their wedding 6 mos. before me. Maybe lace has just always been big in the south?
I was totally overwhelmed with choices in 2003 and laughing at tarheels, because I SOOOO wanted a mermaid dress but that style just looked horrific on me.

LOL, take out the twinkle lights (we had an afternoon wedding) and put in a ballgown instead of mermaid and you just described my wedding. 5 years ago. I feel so ... ahead of the trends.
I'm glad I got married 9 years ago. All I ever see is strapless dresses now which look like crap on me. I was very glad to find something with sleeves on it back in 2003 and I think it'd be even harder to find now!
