Just keep in mind you're not going to find one that is too pillow-y because of SIDS risks.
Yeah, I figured that. I just figured he is probably old enough now that the SIDS risk has largely passed (but please correct me if I am wrong). His current mattress is 100% waterproof with a non cloth cover so I figure maybe something a little softer will help? I don't know.

Yeah, not trying to guilt you or anything, just wanted to make sure you didn't fruitlessly search for a pillow-top crib pad or something. :-) We have one that's pretty nice and quilted, but I think it's a standard BRU / Carter's one, probably whichever one popped up as most popular when I was registering.
Have you tried different sheets already? My kid seems to sleep better with the uber soft PBK chamois sheets. Our other sheets are regular cotton that match his PBK bedding; they're just nowhere near as soft and cozy, especially since he prefers belly sleeping now.

Have you tried someone else's trick of having him sleep with a stuffed animal that smells like you guys? Or was that you who gave that tip to someone else? Ha, forgive me if it was.
What kind of crib sheet do you use? Does he sleep with anything in your bed?

We have tried a stuff animal or pillow case that smells like us. He just ignores it. We use a flannel crib sheet. No he doesn't sleep with anything in our bed. But he loves to flop around over the pillows and with the sheets.
I tried using a blanket with him in the crib and he could care less. He goes down in his crib just fine. But lately he wants to be with us by 3am or so. But who knows maybe it is something else
Is he teething? Babies are smart as hell and know routines well. If he is used to getting in your bed at 3am every morning, then you might have to resort to CIO to break that routine.

Eeek. Yes, all of this. I'm sorry! I know I'm a total bear if I don't sleep. Teething was the pits, and my kid barely has any yet so I'm really in for it.

We were having a similar problem. We switched to a quilted Carters mattress pad (vs the slim, flat one she had before) and she has been sleeping a bit better - not sure if it was a coincidence, but it may have helped a little.
