Ever since DD and I went to HomeGoods last week... (OMG she loved it! We spent about 2 hrs there and didn't buy a single thing.)
Anyway, they had some big comfy armchairs. I sat in one and now I'm dying for one for the new nursery.
Problem is, I have a perfectly good, new glider I got for free. (Ordered a glider as a group gift for friend. Wrong one shipped, they told me just to keep it.) I hate it. It's ugly and not that comfortable. After having nursed DD for a year, I realize it's important to have a comfy place to sit (where I can put my head back for night feedings).
How can I convince DH to spent $300 on an ugly armchair that isn't our style just to replace something functional and FREE?
When DD was born I scoured Craigslist and all the antique/resale shops for a good nursery armchair w a high back and never found anything. So I don't feel hopeful about finding something good used & cheap.
Horrible, but I'm half tempted to do a blog post about it hoping my friends will get me a big ugly comfy armchair! (They read my blog and have been bugging me about what I want to celebrate DD2.)
What do you think? Life to short get an ugly armchair or suck it up and use glider?
(Side note: moms did you rock your kids? DD didn't like it.)
I totally feel you - ugly but basically functional glider vs. fantastically comfy but expensive chair is my current ongoing battle with MH. (we've always got some house related debate on the back burner) I just feel like if i'm going to make this BFing thing work - I need a good chair. Like fantastically comfy good...not just "good enough." And since we're getting a free crib, a CL dresesr for the changing table, using an existing bookcase and probably picking up a small side table at goodwill - I feel like splurging on this one piece of furniture is totally worthwhile.
He thinks the $150 glider from target would work fine. He's basing this on the fact that a friend - who didn't actually BF - has the same one and said she liked it.
So if you couldn't tell my vote is that you should get the chair you want. Though for $300 is there any chance you could find something that you actually like?
Why not sell the ugly glider on Craig's List, then use the money toward the chair you really want? We have a big, fluffy, swivel rocker in the nursery and I love it. I still rock my girls, and they're over two. Ours is along these lines, but in a soft chenille corduroy, if that makes sense.
Life is way too short to have to nurse a kid in an uncomfy chair. Been there. Done that. I still use my rocker in DDs room a lot and I'm glad I paid for and got what I wanted. It's also a decent style so I can move it elsewhere when I'm done with the kiddies.
$300.00 isn't really that bad.
Just tell your H that if you can't get a new chair, he can nurse and rock the kid in the uncomfy one..ha! JK.
Can you sell the other and at least get a bit back? See if someone else would love it? Slide in your other DDs room just to have for stories etc?
Would he go for it if you sell the glider on CL and use your earnings toward the comfy chair? Also, would it be worth it perusing a furniture store to find something more your style and just as comfy as the ugly comfy chair? Maybe that would help.

If you don't like it, just get rid of it. Life's too short to sit in an uncomfortable chair.
Honestly, we've been keeping a glider (which is only comfortable for short periods of time) for a long time to use in a future nursery. But when we have a kid, we're going to be getting a big ugly recliner instead. If I'm going to have to sleep in it or use it regularly, I'm getting something comfy.
I had a free ugly glider for my DD too. And if that's what your glider really looks like (fabric and all) trust me, yours is not ugly! My DD loved being rocked and I'm not sure what I would have done without it so I would personally never consider an armchair because I would insist on something that rocks. Anyways, after she turned 2 or so I never used it and eventually got rid of it.
Do you have a place for the arm chair after DD2 outgrows it? If so, I'd sell the glider and put the money towards an armchair. If not, I'd say just suck it up and use the glider.
Get the armchair! I just finished nursing DS2 for a year so I know what you mean. I have a free hand-me-down glider that was never comfy. Especially when DS got bigger. I always ended up on the sofa. With DS1 I used a lazy boy which was soo much better than the glider.
Reasons for your H why you need it: You will be saving the family tons of money bf'ing instead of buying formula. You need a comfy chair so that you can stay motivated a whole year. It will get tons of use. You can sell the glider on Craigslist to make up for the cost.

Fia - you are right.
Dh's parents did give us $500 for something for the new baby's room though. I'd just hate to spend it on something that we might not use forever. (We bought DD's dresser with the $ they gave us for it.)
I was just on CL and am thinking unless I can find a comfy chair for under $100 and sell the glider for $60 then I won't do it.
UGH. I hate being frugal.
(My DH does have a full time job now and a side job. I picked up a side job too (website work). So things are SO much better for us. When it rains, it pours work-wise for us.)

We looked for MONTHS to find a glider/rocker that is our style when I was PG w/ DD and didn't find anything. Ugh. We are too picky. Like REALLY picky about spending $ on furniture. Cheap/free stuff we will live with ugly, but it will have to be perfect to drop $500 and even that is too low of a price point for the nice, modern ones.
Here's a HOUZZ round-up of ones that are ok, but none are under $800 (except the hard-shell eames which I have sat in and is NOT comfy and you can't rest your head back.)
Now I'm starting to remember why I gave up on the perfect nursing chair when I was PG with DD.

I vote ugly arm chair. My sister and I both hated the gliders we where given. Totally uncomfortable and impossible to nurse in. Gave them to goodwill. I replaced mine with an old comfy wingback chair. and my sister actual got a lazy boy! LOL Having a comfy place to sit when the want to be held, nursed, and read stories too, is important. :Y:

I spent $300 on a new chair. We just sold ours for $40 last spring (then H is like "let's have another baby!!" so it's all his fault) and I refused to buy another ugly ass, uncomfortable chair. Life is too short to have an uncomfortable chair to spend a lot of time in.
There's "sticking to a budget" and then there's "being miserable because I stuck to a budget". So obviously, I vote sell the free chair and get the other.

OMG get the ugly comfy armchair! Our in-laws got us one that heats up and massages and has a built in cooler thing. It's big, it's brown, it's ugly as sin, but I swear my daughter and I live in it. Actually I'm looking for cleaning solutions to clean it because it reeks from her spilling juice/milk on it and my dog laying in it and getting butt stink all over it. Oh god that's gross. Sorry. GET THE ARMCHAIR!

We have a lazyboy. It is the ugliest thing ever.
It is also the most comfortable thing ever, awesome to nurse in, awesome for little kids to sleep in semi-reclined when they are sick. And also ugly. Oh well! Best 300$ kid purchase we made, though.
I paced the house looking for a good chair. I settled on a lawson style chair very similar to this but better quality. The high arm height was good for bfing.

I never had a chair. It's so hard to relate. I never felt like we needed one. Cant you just walk a few extra feet to a couch? Lol, I suck too, obviously.

Bedrooms are upstairs, so couch is actually pretty far away... I did nurse often on the couch during the day.
