Hope it's ok to post this here instead of the CD board ...
I've read over and over not to buy your entire stash of CDs before baby arrives because every baby is different and you might like some more than others. My question is, how many should you buy to start out with? We are thinking of using AIOs and/or pockets. How many should I buy total (to start)? How many different brands? I've been going back and forth and haven't come up with a good solution yet. Any advice?
I'm not sure took the best approach, but we started with 12 BG Freetimes. It's definitely not enough, so I just signed up for the Jillian's trial program, so we can "road test" other styles and see what we like.
I guess it depends on what your frame of mind is. We went into it wanting to spend the least amount as possible; for us, this mean buying prefolds and covers.
We started with 24 orange, yellow and red edge GMD PFs (each) and 4 Thirsties Size 1 duo wraps, along with 3 snappis. We really like PFs. We also had 4 yellow and 4 red workhorses, just because I got them dirt cheap.
Overnight though we had to switch to something that would absorb more. We ended up with roughly a dozen Fuzzibuns. They work for us with 2 inserts and a hemp insert. We also have about a dozen BG3.0s for MIL since she's not exactly the greatest at using PFs.
it depends on if you want to CD your newborn. If so, you will need a newborn stash, and then separate one size stash as one size diapers don't fit til about 12lbs.
For a newborn, they go through 10-12 diapers a day. We had approx. 36 fitted newborn diapers plus an additional 12 orange edge prefolds that a friend loaned me. I did laundry every 3rd day. I just blogged about what we used for the newborn stage if you are interested: pugsnotdrugs.wordpress.com/2012/10/26/cloth-diapering-a-newborn-our-experience/
For one size I think 24-36 is a good number as well. It depends on how often you want to do laundry. I have a bunch of fitteds for use at home, then pockets for daycare. Also have a dozen yellow edge prefolds.
I am a CD hoarder though Definitely don't commit to one brand/style before baby arrives. We suspect DD has a sensitivity to the suede cloth in her BG 4.0s, although we're not sure just yet. The sensitivity to the suede cloth in them is really common, I know many that had to sell off their BGs for something else. A huge PITA if that's all you have in your stash.
We didn't CD until 6 weeks. Then we bought 18 BG OS 3.0s and then when we started doing overnight we bought an additional 6 BG OS 3.0s. I'm cheap and I decided to CD mostly for cost savings. We've used the same 24 diapers and DS is 27 months. So I say we did pretty good.
So far I have 9 newborns, and 16 one-size. Half of my stash are FuzziBunz pockets, and the other half are BumGenius pockets. (I have 1 or 2 freetime styles, actually, which are AIO.)
I'm going to try and get up to 20 newborns, and 30-36 one-size.
I will be home from work for 3-4 months so although newborns may go through more diapers, I can also manage laundry a bit more oftne.
Once I return to work, though, I'm hoping I can manage doing CD laundry 2-3 times per week, depending on how many diapers we end up wtih.

We had about 35 NB diapers--24 PFs, 4 covers, 9 AIOs/pockets.
I have 32 OS diapers in a variety of styles--I know we have 8 BG 4.0s, 4 BG Elementals, 6 fitteds, a bunch of FBs, and a few randoms like a Kawaii, an itti bitti tutto, etc. My initial plan was to sell what we didn't like and buy more of what we did but honestly it's all working fine for different purposes, so I like having a mixed stash.
I do laundry every other day. I could probably stretch it to every third day but I get anxious when I don't have a good stash of clean diapers.
ETA: If I could do it all over again, I wouldn't have wasted money on a separate NB stash. He was in his OS diapers by 3 weeks and probably could have started out in them because he was 9 lbs, 5 oz at birth.
In the beginning we did half disposables, half cloth. We had around 12 newborn AIOS (Lil Joeys and Grovia) that he QUICKLY outgrew (he grew fast - 98 percentile). Then we switched to pockets (BG 4.0 and Kawaii) when he was a month and have used those ever since. We have about 28 pocket diapers but there are a few we don't use anymore for various reasons.
For the next kid I think I will do prefolds and covers for the newborn stage. The newborn AIOS didn't really cut it for us. He soaked through them a lot. But he also was a big baby (not at birth, but he gained a lot of weight quickly) so we probably could have moved up to the pockets earlier too.
I have 2 GroVia newborn AIOs and 6 Thirsties duos AIOs to play with for the newbornish stage. We'll probably use disposables for most of the really small stage. I also have 6 GroVia AIOs and 4 GroVia shells & inserts, as well as 6 BumGenious freestyles. So that's 22 or so? We'll see how we like the variety I've purchased and add to our stash from there.
So far, the thirsties duos and bg freestyles dry really quickly when hung to dry above our washer. The Grovias take 2-3 days.
I started cd'ing when dd was 8 weeks old and fit in one size. I started with flips and have since bought a ton of different kinds. I have way too many so I'm not a great judge as to how many to have. I will say though I use cloth exclusively and go through about 8 diapers a day and maybe 2 nigh time diapers. I did a review on my blog if you want to check it out. I felt like different ones fit better at different times. You can make it very visit effective though. Check out alva baby for cheap pockets.
