How would you handle this decorating quandry?
Our hall is 18' long. I'm looking for a runner that is not overly oriental or traditional in style (preferably contemporary). All the runners I like are way too short, and the runners that are long enough are NMS.
Do I buy one that's too short (at 12 - 14 ft) or do I buy 2 of the same at 8' and hope that they don't move around too much?
FWIW I want a runner b/c the hall is hardwood and the dogs nails on the wood gets NOISY which wakes up our DD (especially in the am when I need her to sleep just a *little* bit longer).
I can take one when I get home tonight. You have to be nice though; the hallway is one of the few unpainted areas.
Sure. Our's is still unpainted too! Our's is in progress - and will be for a while since DH wants to finish the family room before tackling the living room - which is connected to the hall.

Our hallway is about 16 feet long, so we bought 2 5' runners and spaced them about 18"-2 feet apart. We used rug tape to get them to stay in place, which is working really well so far. Here's a pic:

I had that same question when I was shopping for rugs. I opted to get one from the same brand, with the same colors, but a totally different print (it's still botanical, and you can see all the rugs from certain areas in the house). I like how they look near each other. Here is a pic of the other rug:
All my hall runners are the same but very different than all the other rugs in my house. There is a door that separates my LR from the hall, though. Personally, I wanted to get 3 or 4 different rugs that coordinated with one another (either Kilims or contemporary geometric prints), but I could not get DH on board.
Without further ado, here is our hallway in our disaster of a house:

gnome - i like your floors - did you DIY or was it done when you moved in? I thought about doing something like that in our old basement, but it was going to be too much work.
munki - your house looks similar to mine - looong skinny hallway - are you in a ranch too?
How about using FLOR carpet tiles? You can make it as short or long as you want and it will look like one long rug. They shouldn't move around since they are intended to stick together like a rug (I think you actually do stick them together on the bottom). You could use a long rug pad underneath also.
We just have 2 runners with a space in between. In looks fine though even with anti-slip mats underneath they still move around a lot. Though we have 2 cats that run around like mad men. Under normal circumstances they would probably stay put.
It adheres to the back of the rug and then has a rubbery surface to keep it the rug from slipping around on hard surfaces. So far it's been working great, even with 3 dogs roughhousing on the rugs.
