I just got a puffy winter coat for DD and put it on her this morning. As soon as I put her in the carseat, I remembered a discussion on TN about how you can't get the straps tight with a puffy coat, which is exactly what I experienced.
Do you put your kids in the car with puffy coats on? If not, what do they wear in the car in the winter (assuming you live in a cold climate)?
DS has a fleece snowsuit that will be the "in the car" outfit. It's white, which is a bit of a nightmare, but it was a gift. Old Navy has them. There's also a blanket in the car.

No puffy coats in car seats.
DS wears fleece hoodies in the car. I don't dress him super warm in the car becuase he will get hot. When we get to wear we are going i just crawl in the car and change him in there with the doors closed. Well, I would if he would actually allow me to put anything heavier than a hoodie on him without fallign to the ground and screaming.
ETA: My car heats up pretty quickly becuase it is small. We do carry blankets if it is cold when he gets in.

No puffy coats in the car seat. (per our pedi, car seat experts & the car seat instruction booklet)
Currently he wears a hooded sweatshirt with a blanket over his legs. I'm going to get him a sherpa lined hoodie. He also has a fleece jacket but I think the sherpa hoodie will be warmer.
I put a fleece or hooded sweatshirt on the kids. We have remote start and it is just a few steps to the car.
If we are just going to the mall or something, I throw a blanket on the baby and DS1 and I just hurry in. If we are going to be walking around outside I bring coats and put them on at our destination.
Thanks, everyone! If your child goes to DC, do you send a puffy coat with them so they can play outside? I guess I could just keep the coat in her DC bag.
It is warm enough where we live that a fleece hoodie is usually sufficient. But if it is cold enough for a bug puffy coat, I take it off before I buckle them in and then put it on backwards on top of the straps if needed.

Yes. I have a separate coat, hat, and gloves that stay at daycare. There's a parking garage at daycare and we park in a garage at home, so she's never out in the cold on the way to/from school.
I use a fleece poncho with DD a lot. Buckle her in her seat, then pull it over her head over the straps. When we get out, I just undo the straps under the poncho and we're good to go. We got a Skipping Hippos one on Babysteals last year, and DD loves it. There's some in the Kidsteals archive right now: kidsteals.stealnetwork.com/archive_products.php?id=3000892

I took the coat off, put the kid in the car seat, then covered her with either the coat or a blanket. I tried to make it a habit of starting the car a couple minutes in advance so that it was warmed up.
My kids didn't do DC, but when they went to school (which both did starting at age 3) I just put the coat back on when we got there and it went inside with them in case they needed it for the playground.

When DD was a baby, she had a full fleece outfit. I also had a large coat. I would wrap my coat around her when running to and from the car. Now I just leave whatever she has on under the coat. I always keep a blanket in the car and warm up the car before I leave the house.
We have a wool peacoat, which is very fitted, so I am comfortable with him wearing it in the seat. We also have a poncho, but kid doesn't seem to like that. My mom keeps wanting to buy him in a puffy coat, but I keep telling her it isn't safe for use in the carseat.
Wool won't compress like a big puffy coat will. I just normally put him in his clothes with a fleece sweatshirt on and then cover him with a blanket in the car and turn up the heat.
