I've had a child, but it wasn't bad at all. I was less painful than a pap smear. Think of it this way, even if it hurts it is probably a lot less painful than pregnancy and childbirth.

I've never had a kid and it was no biggie. I took DH with me and apparently nearly broke his hand (squeezing) during the insertion, but it was a very short duration of pain and no real pain afterwards.
There was probably a 2-month period afterwards where when I would bend or twist and I could feel it poking me from the inside, but that went away, pretty much.

That's exactly what I'm planning to do and exactly what I'm afraid of.

Define "pretty much."
LOL. The pain at insertion was like the worst period cramp ever. But it was seriously only 10-15 seconds and gone. No big deal, especially considering the benefits.
I only occasionally notice the thing poking me when I'm doing ab work at the gym on the 2nd day of my period - so like once every couple months, maybe. It's just that exact combination of factors, and its like a gentle little internal poke. Enough to be like "oh hey, there's something inside" but not enough to even make me change positions or stop what I'm doing. Definitely not painful.
I've been thinking about getting it but I chickened out. Has anyone had any of the nasty side effects that are talked about all over the internet? Horrible cramps, etc??

Insertion was, like pp said, like a bad period cramp. I had never had kids, it was still not too bad. I have NEVER felt mine poking me from the inside.

I have 2 kids but both were born via c-section. It wasn't bad at all. I took motrin before and it hurt for the 2 minutes it took to put them in then I felt a bit crampy and run down the rest of the day. The next day I was good as new.
I have no kids/never been pregnant. Insertion was a breeze - I had a sharp cramp that lasted like 10 seconds and that was it.
I wasn't expecting to have it inserted that day (not on my period and I wasn't even sure she would want to do it because of the no kid thing) so There was very short time for me to be nervous and I had not prepared with Ibuprofen or anything before like I know a lot of people are told to do. Yet it was a breeze. I had slight cramping later that day but took some Ibuprofen and that was it. Some months I get a bit of cramping but never need to take anything stronger than Ibuprofen and I think my periods are maybe a day or so longer with one day of heavy bleeding and a few days with light bleeding/spotting.
I've never given birth, and insertion was honestly no big deal. I had one sharp cramp, and that was really it. I had spotting maybe for two days, and cramps were slightly worse for a couple of months. I've had it for about 2 years, and I love it. BTW, I've never been able to feel it poking me from the inside. I think a lot the differences in insertion experiences has to do with the doctor that does the insertion. I first asked about getting Paragard when I was going to a different OB/GYN, and she was pretty adamant about not inserting in women that haven't given birth. So, I found a new doctor. I talked with her fairly extensively about how many she had done, how comfortable she was with using them in never-pregnant women, her experience with expulsion, etc. She had inserted several hundred, including many to women who hadn't given birth, and she indicated that she had only had a handful of expulsions. So, bottom line, make sure your doctor has lots of experience.
I found it painful but I was also at the end of my period when I had it inserted. I had read online that is when it should be done but according to the doctor that isn't necessarily the case because everything is more sensitive. It was painful and he almost didn't do it because I couldn't keep still. Once it was in I could only feel it for a day or two until my body got use to it. Now, I rarely feel it unless I move in certain ways and it isn't very often.
Also, my period has been a lot heavier than what I was use to (always took the pill) but it is manageable. The cramps aren't too too bad.

I have mirena, and have never had kids, and it wasn't bad at all. Like others have said, there was some cramping during insertion, but nowhere near what I was worried about. I have never felt it since, and with mirena, I haven't had a period or spotting or cramping in four years, so I'm a fan.

I'd had two kids before insertion, so I don't know if that made a difference. But I'm sort of a wimp and I didn't think it was bad at all. Took a couple of Advil before the procedure, and other than about 10-15 seconds of bad cramping when my gyn was putting it in, it didn't bother me at all.
I've had it for over five years and my periods were heavier in the beginning but I don't know if that was from the Paragard or just a post-pregnancy thing (since my first pregnancy also impacted what a "regular" cycle looked like for me), and I've never felt it nor has DH.

Thanks everybody! Got it this morning and it the actual insertion was totally fine. Now the cramping afterwards I can do without, but I think that's getting better now. Thanks for the encouragement!
