So we are going with someone else to finance the home instead of the original lender who owns the house. So the plan is to get a construction loan so in that way we don't have to pay for the following right away and it will be part of our mortgage payment.
1.) New roof
2) Installing geothermal unit (It had it set up but someone stole the furnace/unit)
3) Mold remediation in the basement.
The only way we can get this loan is if all of the above is done by contractors which is fine because we can't or don't want to do #2 and #3 by ourselves anyway.
So this means we are getting a new kitchen! So DH's plan is to get the kitchen done in 6-7 months and then refinance. Our estimated closting date is mid December. He wants new countertops, new appliances and new floor... with the same cabinets. And he is willing to get them painted professionally since its such a pita to do them with a 2 yr old and two dogs in the house.
I think if we are going to replace the things he wants to then we might as well do it all and do something about the cabinets as well. And since the cabinets are in good condition, maybe we can just get them refinished instead of painting and put new hardwares on. WDYT?

Honestly, the doors on the upper cabinets are NMS. Also, if you're demoing the kitchen, are you removing the soffit? You can put taller cabinets in if you take it out (but I don't know if your soffit is hiding wires/pipes/ducts/etc - wires are pretty easy to move, pipes & ducts are less easy).
Personally, I would prefer to get new cabinets if I was also getting new counters & appliances. Since they are in decent shape, maybe you can sell them on craigslist if you can take them down without destroying them.
Take a look at this site for good quality cabinets at an affordable price: www.cliqstudios.com/
I'm not employed by them and I don't get anything for sending you there. I just like to pass on deals when I see them.
I would just tear it all out, even Ikea would be nice. I do like painted cabs though, you could just get new doors if they are standard sizes. Paint it all white or grey or whatever.
At the very least, I would get new cabinet doors for upper cabinets, to match the lowers. The uppers are nms, and the mismatch just draws more attention to them.
I would really look at what I wanted in new appliances and the flow of the room, then see what makes sense as far as keeping the cabinets or replacing them.
Man, this is overwhelming! This is the dining room and the kitchen is through the doorway on the right.
Now I am wondering if the wall on the right (starting from the chair rail) is a load bearing wall. If not, then if we can open it up to the dining room. This will make me lose the cabinets that has the oven in it. But I was thinking of adding more cabinets on the empty wall that faces the island and the kitchen window to house the oven and a cooktop and get rid of the island from the middle. Is getting rid of island a bad idea?
Ugh I need something to show the floorplan to explain. What do you guys use to draw the floorplan?
I'm surprised at the responses. I think the cabinets would look great repainted.
I think the cabinets would look good repainted (with new doors), but her H would rather have them refinished because he thinks painting wood is wrong, so I was keeping that in mind when I responded.
Oh also: From where the picture of the kitchen is taken, there is a door onthe right that leads to the garage and on the left of the door is the place for the fridge. So I was thinking about moving the door to the fridge's spot and move the fridge on the new wall.
ETA: According to the listing the kitchen is 10X15.
So far I like the idea of getting rid of the current upper cabinet doors and replacing them with different doors. I also like the idea of getting rid of the soffit so I can put tall cabinets. Decisions, decisions! LOL!
Are the existing cabinets full (ply)wood construction, or are the shelves particle board?
If they are anything other than full wood I'd ditch 'em (pull out intact and donate or sell though!) and replace them. Our kitchen cabinets appear to be in great shape - until you really look at them and realize all the shelves are particle board and are starting to sag. It's annoying. Particularly if you are doing all the flooring and everything else...take this chance to start anew for real.
