So. I am a little behind on this, but I'm finally watching The Wire. H and I just watched the Season 3 finale tonight, and we started the series...oh, about a week and a half ago or so? We're hooked!
I have to say that it wasn't until halfway through season 2 that I really started to understand what all the fuss is about this show. And now that we're done with season 3, I truly appreciate the greatness of The Wire...but I'm not even close to being done yet! I've heard that season 4 is really awesome, and my brain can't even process that. I'm blessed to be without spoilers, so I have no idea what to expect after this.
A few random comments for what I've seen so far: - I cannot believe they killed Stringer Bell. I really thought he was going to be a major character for the rest of the show. Still in shock here. - I love how this show makes you love characters who can be really terrible people sometimes. Like McNulty...even though he's a womanizer and a pretty terrible dad, I still find myself hoping that he's going to be happy. What's with that? - I like how things that were minor in previous seasons suddenly come up and take center stage later on. This is definitely not a mindless show where you can fold laundry and watch at the same time. And I love that.
Anyway, I just wanted to share and see if any other Wire lovers were on this board. Please don't spoil anything else for me! I'll probably post again once I'm done.

I just watching all five seasons last month. It's a good show.
The show definitely does a good job of showing the humanity of everyone. Sometimes the good people are the "bad guys" and the bad people are the "good guys." Some of those corner kids were such genuine hearts always trying to do the right thing, not knowing any other world than the one they were born into. And some of those cops were such lazy, corrupt selfish people. It was funny to sometimes find yourself rooting for the heroin dealer.
DH and I watched all 5 seasons recently, too. It took me awhile to get into it but I'm really glad I did. #4 is my favorite but I won't spoil anything. I can't wait to talk about it once you're done though.
It's always fun to find people who also watched the show because there's so many details that are great conversation starters. DH is going to a bachelor party in Baltimore (it was a random decision by the groom, no actual connection to the city whatsoever) and DH is completely bummed no one in the party has seen The Wire. He's very disappointed no one understands to run and hide when you hear "The Farmer in the Dell" whistled in the distance.
We finished the series about two years ago and felt like we lost something once it was over. It's a really well written series and the "good guy" changes depending on the situation. Enjoy the rest!
I loved how every single taxpayer who crossed paths with Omar (except for the lawyer) fell completely in love with him. That scene in season two where he's testifying/committing perjury against Bird is sheer brilliance. The judge and the prosecuting attorney and the deputy doing the crossword puzzle were gooney-eyed and all "OMG, I totally want to have your babies!"
We loved everything about this series. It was wonderful. We are from Baltimore, so just like everyone else, when there is a show that is filmed in your area, we really could relate and it was pretty accurate on how Baltimore is...not sure about the "wire" part, but you never know

Even McNulty's accent?
From being from wherever he is in real life, he did pretty good!! People outside of Baltimore always tell me I have the "Baltimore Accent", which of course, I have no idea what that is. Maybe because I say hon? LoL

I was shocked when I heard McNulty speaking in one of the behind the scenes. I had no idea he wasn't American. So his accent was kind of crappy though? I have such a bad ear for that stuff, I wouldn't know one way or the other.
The actor who played Stringer Bell is British too, right?

Yep, he's English and so is McNulty. I love how different Stringer is from the actor's character on The Office. I also enjoy having Amy Ryan's on both shows.
However, I dislike that Tristan Wilds (Michael) joined 90210 after The Wire.

Such a fantastic show. I know you haven't finished it yet, but I would recommend a second viewing at some point. I'm making my way through the seasons for the second time now, and it's even more amazing than I realized.
As soon as I finished with this show I inhaled Homicide:Life on the Streets and Generation Kill. Once I catch up on TrueBlood in time for the fifth season with my TV boyfriend down there, Treme is next. I'll (eventually) watch anything David Simon is involved with. I have a burned copy of The Corner somewhere in my house that I still need to watch.
I highly recommend his books Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets and The Corner: A Year in the Life of an Inner-City Neighborhood.
