Just make sure you wash your hands every two seconds for the next 24-36 hours and keep any pillowcases, washcloths or towels that have touched your eyes separate from your regular laundry.
Wipe down everything. Change your pillow cases (and sheets if they are up by your face), towels and wash cloths every day. Hand wash like you've never hand washed before. When Natalie had it, I wouldn't even let her lay on the couch w/out something under her head that I could throw in the washer. And don't forget stuffed animals that the boys snuggle. Wash them all, then let them pick one to snuggle while they're infected (if they need one at all). Then wash that again after you start the drops.
It is insanely contagious, and can easily reinfect you/others in your house. Good luck. It is a huge pita, but usually short lived w/ the drops.
Also if you wear contacts consider wearing your glasses for a couple days. The pair you have in right now is pretty much ruined because they are now contagious. And for the love of god don't touch your eye. This is the hardest part.
this is how i felt when i got an ear infection. kids get them all the time and i was all "oh, it hurts a bit." I THOUGHT MY EAR WAS GOING TO FALL OFF AND THAT SOMEONE WAS STABBING ME IN THE HEAD WITH AN ICE PICK. i apologized to L for not being more sympathetic. ha.
You poor thing. I never had it, but I remember Anna's eyes getting like that. I think viral pinkeye is the kind that just makes your eyes a bit pink and itchy, while bacterial pinkeye is the horrible crusts kind. But I am not a doctor.
I had it a few weeks ago and got it in the other eye because I thought my under eye concealer was uncontaminted. I was very wrong. All your eye makeup has to go. All of it. Even if you just spend $100 replacing old stuff.
Both my girls have had it in the past two weeks, and now my eye is getting reddish and my vision is a little blurry. No major discharge yet -- that sounds awful. I hope I can avoid it if I start the drops ASAP.

I complain about my teenagers pretty regularly to anyone who will listen to me, but I gotta say, I haven't had pinkeye in, like, a decade. So I've finally discovered an upside to teenagers!
omg. i thought it meant that your eyes got a little pink and irritated.
i literally had to soak my eye crust with a wet washcloth this morning so that i could open them. it hurts and it's slimy and my vision is blurry. stuff is constantly oozing out of them. this is SO gross. i have an appointment this afternoon.
yuck.
The first time I had it as a little girl I bumped my way into my parent's room screaming that I was blind. To be fair this was probably around the time that Mary Ingalls went blind so I was like, "well, yeah!"
I had that two weeks ago, it sucked. Apparently it can come along with an upper respiratory infection? I had no clue, but I had pink eye and a nasty cold/sinus infection at the same time. I wanted to die, lol.
Anyway, they gave me eye drops and put me on antibiotics and it eventually went away. But not until I found out that I was allergic to sulfa drugs (they gave me sulfa drops first) and my eye swelled shut. That was fun.
I'm sorry, it's the worst. I had it as a kid and I literally had sheets of white ooze coming out of my eye. The drops that they give you will knock it out.
Oh yeah, it sucks. I had it one time in BOTH eyes and I too had to soak my eyes with a warm washcloth before they would open all the way. Thankfully it didn't last long. I hope yours goes away soon!
OH! Meant to tell you. A lot of doctor's offices don't want you to go in with it, and will just call in a prescription based on your symptoms. So you may not have to wait to get the drops.
I called Natalie's pedi and said she needed to be seen, and they were all "NO NO NO! Stay there! We'll call in the script shortly. Do NOT come into the office." It was actually almost funny hearing the panic in the nurse's voice at the idea of me dragging a pink-eye infected kid into the office.
