I'm flying out there for business conference the beginning of December our conference doesn't start until Monday and I arrive Sunday afternoon and coming home the conference ends Wednesday and I don't fly home until late afternoon Thursday. Any rental car/ transportation would be on me so i would like to keep it low. We have a shuttle that takes us to and from the conference and activities in the evenings.
It's been a while since I've been, but I mostly just remember Newark as being a college town (U of D).
Philly is not too terribly far north, although I'm not sure what the best way to get there would be. Maybe getting to Wilmington and taking a train? In the opposite direction there's outlet shopping in Rehoboth if you need to finish holiday shopping!
If you're flying, are you flying into BWI or PHL? I imagine they are the closest?

I'm flying into PHL and staying at the Hilton Wilmington/Christiana
Newark isn't exactly the center of the known universe. It's a cute college town that'll probably make you feel old. There is twice daily Amtrak service on the NE Corridor. You could get to Philly or Wilmington.
This place is sort of fun, thought the beer is strictly ordinary.
I love Longwood Gardens and in December they should be all set up for Christmas.
I went to U of D and there really isn't anything to do in town except eat and drink. Christiana Mall is a stop away on I-95. Wilmington is a cute little city but not sure what there is to do there.

I work in the Newark area.
Philly isn't far. You can drive or take a train. Trains run regularly from Wilmington. There is a train from Newark, but the times are mostly for commuters.
There are some decent restuarants in Wilmington, but I can't remember names. I'll try to find some.
Main St. in Newark near UD is small, but has lots of restaurants and some shops. Stone Ballon wine house sometimes has specials on wine/snack pairings. Ali Baba (middle eastern) is also good. Iron Hill is decent. If you're feeling more like nachos and beer at a dive bar then check out the Deer Park.
The Christiana Mall is good for shopping. It's been upgraded over recent years and has some nicer stores than a typical mall (this depends on the malls near you, of course).
Longwood Gardens isn't far.
If you're into seeing Amish, you can drive the back roads toward Lancaster, PA and see many Amish farms.

I live very close to that area. The Wilmington waterfront is nice...there's a casino and a race track if that is your thing. Philly is a trainride away...it's Philly. There are nicer citites in the world but Independence Square is always worth seeing. The Christiana Mall is really nice...they have a Nordstroms and some other nice stores. King of Prussia Mall is also within driving distance and it has all the higher end stores.

The Stone Balloon wine house is actually fancy if you can believe that.
