DH is going to England for a business trip, I'm thinking about tagging along. Would get there early on a Weds and leave early on a Sunday. Has to be in Manchester, about 160 miles away, for a day and a half for business.
Flying into London, so would have Weds there, Thursday and Friday in Manchester, Fri night in London and all day Saturday, early flight Sunday.
What would you do in London and what to do in Manchester?

Saturday ideas- Tower of London (get there when they open) Lunch at Borough Market Evensong at Westminster Abbey (its at 3pm)
Friday nights the British Museum is open until 8:30pm; if you have time to check it out it is definitely worth it! We spent 4 hours there and didnt even get past the first floor!
Have you been before? If not I would consider a hop on hop off bus tour, which will give you a good overview of London. Borough Market is awesome (if you eat meat have a chorizo sandwich, so good), St Pauls is beautiful, and any of the museums would be good (V&A, Tate, British Museum). Manchester? Hmm. When are you there? Starting on the 17th of this month they have a Christmas Market. Shopping. See a Man U or Man City game (although getting tickets could be very difficult). You could go to the Lowry Arts Centre.
If you like museums and history, my three favorites in London were the Tower of London, Westminster Abbey, and the British Museum. I'm pretty sure it would take you a week to see everything at the Museum, which has historical artifacts from pretty much all over the world that you certainly never learned about in history class. We spent about 8 hours there and definitely didn't see everything.

My favorite things in London were St. Paul's Cathedral, Westminster Abbey, the Victoria & Albert Museum, boat cruise down the Thames to Greenwich, and the London Eye.
My favorite things where the Tower of London, the Churchill Cabinet War Rooms, and St. Pauls Cathedral. Evensong was a good way to get inside Westminster without actually doing the tour, and the service was beautiful. I second going to Borough Market for sone food, I wish we would have made it back there. I have sone london links and review in my blog if you're interested.
London Eye was pretty cool, but given 2 days, if you can't fit in it, I think it's okay. I would definitely try to visit Borough Market. It was amazingly delicious.
We used Rick Steves to do the Westminster Walk. We didn't go in Westminster and I wish we would have.
By the time we got to London (4th city of our trip), we were pretty sick of museums so we browsed through National Gallery, but we still loved the British Museum! I also really liked National History museum.
Given 2 full days there I'd try to do/see: -Buckingham Castle -Westminster walk/go inside -Tower of London -Borough Market
If you'll be taking the train/National Rail btwn Manchester and London, you can use your train tickets and a coupon book to get BOGO tickets for several sites, inclufing Tower and Eye. (not sure if you're flying though).
We opted not to buy tickets for a hop on/off tour bus, but we did find the London buses really easy to navigate so we rode them whenever we had time to see more of London (as opposed to underground Tube). This was maybe one of my fav things we did.
If you're comfortable driving (or hiring a car), Lyme Hall is within 30-45 minutes of Manchester. This is the setting for Mr Darcy's house in the A&E Pride and Prejudice, as well as a stunning home on grounds that are delightful. You can get a good view of the peak district as well.
I second the hop on and off tour. I went to London on a business trip, and ended up only having around 6 hours of daylight in the city. I did the hop on and off tour and was able to see a lot more than I would have otherwise. I got off at Westminster Abbey and St. Paul's Cathedral. If I'd had more time, I would have also liked to spend time at the Tower of London. I walked to Buckingham Palace the next morning before I left for my flight since my hotel was only about a mile away. I would definitely see that and try to walk through Hyde Park. Hopefully you'll have a nice day like I did. It was beautiful to see in the morning with the fog.
