I need to really start laying out the nursery so I can work with DH on what I need him to build.
What has worked best for you all? My plan is to be a mix of toy storage and book storage with various heights, depending on if I want everything "right within reach." Also we won't have a separate playroom, so the baby's room is where it is.
I think I want a tower of these along one wall, starting low and working their way up.
And then we have one small area of wall, where I think it might be fun to have DH build something similiar to this (but just one of the sections):
We have a small toy box basket thing in the living room, and a few bigger toys in her room. The rest are in the basement. We have a toy rotation, so we don't have them available for her to play with all the time. It's nice that we don't have to have them all out and displayed and when we rotate them, they seem new to her. And we don't have to put away and organize 100 toys every night. I couldn't imagine having all her toys displayed like that, TBH. I could see it getting messy and disorganized quickly. But to answer your question, yes that storage should be enough.
No basement unfortunately. The only place we could store stuff would be the garage or maybe the attic, although we don't have anything up there and access is a pain.

We don't have a basement either, but I think if you wanted to rotate toys, you could get a rubbermaid tub and put them in the garage, if you have space.
We don't have a good system at the moment because our play area has been our living room. We have a toy box that has every toy in it we have, minus legos (its own plastic tub) and cars (we have a plastic tub PLUS some). When we move, all toys are staying in their rooms for the time being. I want to set something up in the family area for them to play, but I don't know what yet. Of course, it'll be completely disfunctional because I have to have it work for a toddler AND an elementary schooler.
It's fine! Baskets organized by category (blocks in one, art supplies in another etc) work the best for me on shelves. I can pull out, put away, easy peasy.
I also have baskets in every room. We're not the type of family to keep stuff stashed only in the playroom or hang out their all day.
Just make sure they're easy for kids to pull off and safe. I taught Rubes a lot of independence that way..and she doesn't whine every 8 minutes for stuff.
For books..I like them on a shelf. Plain and simple and I can just put them back and not stress about pretty. Rubes loves books and pulls 1/2 of them off 10 times a day. I don't have time to make sure they blend in the room.
I also donate stuff all the time she's tired of/annoy me. We have plenty. She likes the same 4 things over and over again. The next kid won't know what's missing. So don't be afraid to do that either.
We're also basket people. We have Expedits in both the playroom and the nursery, and I love having baskets to stuff things in. I think what you're outlining looks fine for storage, and would recommend being open to having baskets/ottoman or something in your living area, which is likely where you'll spend a lot of time playing.
I'm 100% sure that the living room will become kid central also. I also have an extra expedit in my office/craft room that will likely have toy storage as well.
I figure if I can at least throw stuff into bins and put it on a shelf then it won't be all over the floor all the time (hopefully?).
