So we just moved into a new house, and I really need to paint the kitchen asap. I need to take a photo so that you can fully understand the horror of it, but it is basically painted the colors of a cub scout uniform, slate blue and mustard yellow. The cabinets are oak with cream colored countertops.
I originally said the cabinets are getting painted white after the holidays and we are going to redo the countertops, but realistically, with a 6 month old and a crazy 4 year old, and working full time, I don't see how it can happen. Evenutally, yes that is my goal, but in the meantime, how do I make it livable. What color would go with the ugly oak in the meantime. I am contemplating a super light mint green, but not sure if that would work or not. Ideas or suggestions???
Seeing as how anything would be an improvement, I wouldn't paint the walls an interim color - paint them the color you want after they're white. Bonus: the correct wall color that might clash a little with the oak might motivate you to paint them white sooner rather than later. By pale mint, do you really mean spa green? Check the paint bio.
A piece of advice for when you do paint: use a paint additive like Floetrol to smooth out brush strokes.
I like a warm neutral with oak - I think it helps work with the oak, rather than look odd against it. Examples would be a soft buttery cream/yellow, beige, greige, even bolder colors such as terra cotta. I am not sure about mint green, it sounds too cool. But green can be warm with the right undertone.
In our house, we have used SW Blonde, and I am planning to use SW Perfect greige in the main living areas soon. To me, the benefit of these colors is that they blended well with the oak, and will also look nice with fresh white trim and cabinetry (which we are in the process of doing). So if you don't want to repaint the walls, you may consider a color that will work now and later when you do the cabinets.
My mom just had her kitchen painted a darker tan brownish and deeper autumn orange color. She's never changing out her oak (hers are decent anyways) and the paint change was like she got a whole new kitchen!

We just had our kitchen painted Hancock Green by Benjamin Moore (and by just, I mean today!). It is a nice warm green that isn't too dark. It looks great according to the pics H sent, very nice against our white trim and oak floors.
