I didn't know that I liked cranberries until I tasted something other than the jelly kind in a can. I love the whole cranberries with orange stuff (like from Trader Joes ), but we mostly use it for other things (like as an ingredient in an appetizer) rather than as a side for thanksgiving.
I make a Cranberry Jello Salad that has Fresh Cranberries, Red Jello (Cranberry/Raspberry), Pineapple, Walnuts, and Celery in it
You had me up until "celery." I love all things cranberry. I'm making a cranberry chutney this Tday, but I'm also opening up a can. It's not Thanksgiving without the sound of the cranberry jelly coming out of the can.
I haven't eaten cranberry sauce since my great-grandmother passed away 15 years ago. I would only eat hers. When she died, she took the recipe with her. Sad. She never kept a recipe book or anything, so when she died the family was pretty disappointed. She was a great cook.
I like it jellied from the can, with can lines still evident. We're classy like that.
this is a turkey day tradition for my family. It HAS to have can lines. And then at some point during the meal you make a point of telling the cook that the turkey is good and the mashed potatoes are cool and all - but you're really blown away by how he/she managed to carve those perfect lines in the cranberry sauce.
But we actually like the chunky homemade kind (assorted recipes used - all enjoyed), so last year I got smartassy and made homemade cranberry sauce and modified the recipe that it would jell solid - and then put it in a cleaned out can and unmolded it at the dinner table.
