Their new stuff seems to not have bumpers. Amelia literally ONLY slept with her cheek touching the bumper. I think it's cause she was so used to having her cheek on my boob. I'm very much team bumper. Flame away. I'll take it off when she is able to use it as en exit strategy, but I don't wanna. The breathable ones are less controversial if you feel like you want one.
I love it. (FTR, We still don't have a crib, either, lol ) If we did have a crib, I would go bumper-less. Or get one of those mesh bumpers that compliment the style that you have there.
I don't know how true it is but I have heard of SID being higher in cribs with bumpers. Something about the air re-circulating around baby's head. Like I said, not a whole lot of science there.
But the thing that concerned be the most was when Sammy starts to stand in her crib, she can easily use the bumper as something to get a foothold and I have seen first hand a child flip herself out of the crib and onto the floor. Luckily, it was carpet and she was ok in the end. But what a way to make your heart jump into your throat!

The concern is actually that if a baby doesn't have good head control it could get "caught" and suffocate. It's the same reason people don't recommend quilts and sleep positioners in the crib. There are also people who say circulating air helps prevent SIDS, and they recommend either a ceiling fan or some other fan in the room.
My husband laughs at me when I tell him this, because 37 years ago he slept in a crib with a drop side, bumpers and a quilt - but without a fan, and he survived.
Honestly, I don't know how accurate all the "research" really is, but ...
Oh in my sort of defense, FWIW, A didn't sleep in her crib until after 3 months and the SIDS chances are greatly reduced by then. And I did worry about it, but if I didn't worry about that it was something else. At least she was getting sleep and I was sleeping with my husband again. We were all better off for the wear.
We went without a bumper for the first four months or so...largely because I heard all the SIDS/suffocation stuff. But when Ellie started rolling, she was always sticking limbs through the slats and I was afraid she would get stuck. So we got a breathable bumper in a solid color. It worked fine but we have already taken it back out because she was getting her feet up on top of it and kicking it down so it wasn't serving any purpose anymore. We used it probably 2.5 months in total.
So IMO, not necessary, or at least a "wait and see if you need it" situation.
We use a mesh bumper. D is always rolling around & gets stuck in the corner of the crib. I'm sure he would have gotten stuck in thesthe slats if the bumper wasn't there.
Q had a bumper, but he didn't sleep in his crib until he was 4 months old and by that point had good head control. No, they aren't necessary, but they are good for keeping arms and legs out of slats.
Very cute! I'm in the market for something similar for Lily's big girl room.
I guess for bumpers, I'm in the not needed team, especially not for a little baby. But maybe it would be needed when they get older, like Kim and Meghan have said, and at that point, it might be harder to get it, like it would be unavailable or something?
We are team regular bumper. Mia slept with us in a co-sleeper until she was about 3 - 3 1/2 months or so. When she started sleeping in her crib, she was all over the place so I was really glad I had the bumper.

I'm sure this is totally flammable, but Maisy used one and still has it in her crib. She slept in a bassinet in our room the first 4 months, and then I when she did move to her room, I bought a mesh one, but returned it because it was not compatable with her crib style. My pedi's opinion was that she was okay with a regular bumper, so that's what I went with. I was going to take it out around 9 months or so, as recommended, but I actually don't like the way her mattress fits without it (I have it tucked slightly around the mattress). Her mattress is on the lowest setting, and she doesn't try step on trying to get or anything, so for now, I've just left it in. I actually know of a handful of other moms who left theirs in until the child moved to a toddler bed.
I didn't buy a bedding set for Maisy, and I just bought a solid colored bumper separately to coordinate with my other linens.
