Duct guy is here now and asking if I want a sanitizing solution for the furnace/ductwork at the end. I think he said it's a chlorine dioxide solution? He said it would take care of bacteria/mold/fungus in the ductwork. He said probably OK without it, would be better with. Guy seems good so far and comes recommended. Is this something I want in my house or something to steer clear of? $25 for the treatment, if that makes a difference.
I usually am too, but I know zero about this chemical and whether it's something I really want to be breathing. However, I know breathing mold isn't great either. Gah. I need to decide by the time he's done cleaning out the dryer hose
Yeah, I've been Googling like mad trying to see if anyone has anything bad to say about it I think I'm on the verge of OKing it. Maybe I'll just sit outside for the afternoon and try to air out the house for a while... At least it's sunny today!
Well, I had him do it. I've got the doors and a few windows open. He said he recommends duct cleaning every 3 years, and I didn't want to wait another three years or pay for another call now if my allergies didn't improve.
He snaked a vacuum brush all the way back to the furnace on each vent, so I'm hoping this takes care of the allergies I've had since we turned on the heat this year. He said it looked like it was 10+ years since the older ducts had been done. I saw some of what came out of them , though he did give me a handful of pocket change that he found down in there somewhere, so score?
The change is all pennies circa 1942/43. Wonder how long this house has had duct work? Knowing nothing about the history of HVAC, I assumed it was relatively recent and we probably had radiators back then, but maybe it's been a while. Or maybe someone just had a collection of old pennies...that they tossed down the vent
Well, it sounds like he's honest, if nothing else! LOL
We had it done in our last house before we listed it for sale. We had newborns in the house and the showed us documentation that it was perfectly safe.

You and I seem to be doing all the same things on our houses!! Do you mind if I ask how much the duct cleaning was? I'm comparing a couple people now to do ours.

No problem: Duct cleaning: $200 for up to 8 vents ($15 per vent additional) Dryer duct: $75 (half off because I got two services) Sanitizing: $25
Still waiting on window pics ;D I hope you were able to fix the paint issue on the new one. I saw your pic of the fireplace. It was pretty and the new floors are gorgeous.

Window guy is here as we speak lol. Should be taking pics tomorrow. Finally!!!!!!!
Yea!! We're currently in negotiations with our roofer pick. He wants only one brand of shingle, but we want a reproduction historic shingle shape in another brand. May have to ditch him if he insists on his normal brand, which only makes modern shapes. It's too bad because we've had a heck of a time getting anyone to show up and quote the job. And all the while we have a leak...

We have a leak too!!! Can't wait to get past that and feel our house is stable.
