Bookwise, a friend lent us something along the lines of "10,000 Baby Names." Initially I thought it would be great since it would have a lot of options, but I quickly grew to hate it since (1) it was overwhelming and (2) it appeared the editors just picked random nouns from the English language and stuck them in there to bulk up their list without any regard for whether anyone would actually name their child that.

I found the copy of "What Shall We Name the Baby?" given to me by MIL (the same copy she used for DH) much more helpful -- it was shorter, so it didn't have quite as much selection (and I noticed some fairly "standard" names were missing -- I think Lindsey was one) but was so much easier to digest. It worked fine for DH and I because we wanted classic names.

I second the Baby Name Wizard book and website. Also nameberry.com and behindthename.com.
