Last night, about 1am, I took the pup out and we had a run-in with a damn skunk. I did the tomato juice remedy this morning and it actually seemed to work in removing the oils/smell. Since I didn't have the juice last night, I also tried a combo of baking soda, peroxide, and dish detergent but that didn't do anything. Just curious if there's anything else out there that others have actually tried with success. Thanks in advance!
W deal with this about once every 6 weeks! We buy natures miracle skunk odor remover shampoo. It's a liquid enzyme shampoo that breaks down the oil proteins and it works really well. It takes a couple applications but we don't rinse the first time. They sell it at pet stores and farm stores for about $10 a bottle. I would pay twice that. Tomato just makes them smell like spunky pasta. But the dawn dish soap should have helped a little. I would def try the natures miracle. If your dog has a double coat (like our rottie), they will pretty much always smell like PePe LePue when they get wet. Sorry that happened! It really sucks! Oh the other great thing about natures miracle is you can use it on yourself and clothing as well.
Great. Thanks so much!! I'll get some of the Nature's Miracle later today. (And you deal with this once every 6 weeks?? Ugh. Oh, and my house smells awful, too. I lit all my candles and washed the floors.)
Quincy had his first skunk encounter a few weeks ago, when we had an unseasonably warm week. We used the peroxide/baking soda/dish soap wash, and I added some white vinegar for good measure. It helped enough that you couldn't smell it unless you stuck your nose on his head, but we had to wash him like three or four times to get to that point. The next day I took him to Petco for a skunk bath and he was fine after that. You could still smell it on the top of his head for the next week or two when he was wet, but only when he was sticking his head right in our faces. Which he likes to do a lot. lol.
I did buy the Nature's Miracle skunk bath when I was at Petco so if this happens again, we'll use that first.
Oh, and my house smells awful, too. I lit all my candles and washed the floors.
Make sure you go scrub surface that the oil might have touched, and set out bowls of white vinegar and baking soda (separately, not mixed together, lol). It absorbs the smell nicely. The smell was gone from our house by the next afternoon.
Thanks for all the responses. I did end up mopping the floor and steam cleaning the carpet and rugs. That helped a lot. I figure it'll take a few weeks to get the house back to normal. I did buy the Nature's Miracle skunk odor remover from PetSmart and will clean him again with that stuff. Hopefully this NEVER happens again but if it does, I'm prepared.

I used the Natures Miracle stuff and the smell went away on his body after about a week of baths. Mine got sprayed up the nose though so every time he snorted, it smelled. He also went straight to our area rug and wiped his body all over it before I realized what happened... it went right to the garbage.
I have heard womens douche works better than anything but have never tried it. I pray I never have to deal with it again, it was awful. I think mine actually caught the skunk because he had a skinned chin area. He was on the hunt for that skunk for weeks. dummy!
