I've been looking for an inexpensive dresser for DH's closet, so I went to the IKEA website for some ideas, and low and behold - they now do shipping! YAY! I've never even been to an IKEA store - the closest one is about 6 hours away - and whenever I find something I want from them I have to order on Amazon or ebay and end up paying so much more.
They have always had shipping available, but only on limited items. They also have always had the priciest shipping known to man...crazy high shipping.
They've always done shipping on some things right, but their rates are exorbitant? Did you add the dresser to your cart to see the shipping rates? I've just contented myself with never going in one before I die - they refuse to do business in the quarter of the nation located between Houston and Atlanta, and I never remember to go when I'm traveling.
Oh yeah, that's right.. I guess I do remember shipping on very few items, but it was never on anything I wanted. They must have expanded their shipping inventory recently, or maybe they're shipping all items now? I have to try adding more items to my cart to see if it works I guess, and I didn't realize the shipping was so high... darn it!
Agree with the above that they've always done limited shipping. I wanted to order a gift card for my brother last year and shipping on just the gift card was something like $8.00! I didn't buy it for him.
And we went up this summer and got the Hemnes bed but they failed to tell us we also needed to get a separately sold center rail (they did tell us about the support boards) and it cost $30 to ship the one rail to us. We could have driven there (45 minutes away) but when you figure it would have been about 3 hours of our time to get just the one rail, DH decided to pay for it and argue later. They wouldn't give us credit.
They really aggrevate me some times. They are not customer friendly.
Ok, I'm a moron I guess it still is limited shipping from what I can see , but with hearing about their high shipping rates I guess I probably wouldn't be ordering from them anyways! You would think for being such a big/popular store they would do shipping on everything. That alone aggravates me! Guess I won't be shopping at Ikea anytime soon, unless I'm bored and want to make a vacation out of it some weekend and drive 12 hours total...like that's gonna happen!

Whenever I looked shipping was as much or more than the item I wanted.

It's so dumb. IKEA practically invented the flat box assembly so you would think you would be able to buy anything online and have them ship it for next to nothing. Mine is 2 hours away and there is always something I need from there. They could make a killing off my family alone if they spiffed up their online shipping services.
Yeah, they wanted $99 to ship $70 worth of stuff that was out of stock at the store near us. I was pissed. Yeah, it's only about 25 minutes away and of course they want to encourage us to go in person, but when the item I want isn't even in stock there, $99 is effing ridiculous.
We just bought a new kitchen for the rental unit, a pretty small kitchen, and it cost us $150 to have it shipped. We debated just going in, but we'd have to rent a U-haul to get it home, and with all the lugging boxes around we decided it would pretty much come out even.
We are getting our bonus room couch there and keep debating about shipping. It's an $800 couch and shipping is $300. However, we'd have to rent a uhaul and hope it was in stock when we went.
When we bought our kitchen, we rented a uhaul one-way from Cincinnati to Indy. It was about $250 including gas. Having it, though, probably encouraged us to buy more than we would have otherwise (including a mattress, a table, and an expedit).
