My sofas will need replacing soon as they are over 10 years old and pretty shot. The fabric has held up well (twill) but will probably get a different type for the new furniture. What type of fabric is your couch upholstered in? Is it easy to clean and remove pet hair? I have a medium sized dog...
Look for Aniline leather, it's the kind that is dyed all the way through, not just on the surface. That way, if there is a surface scratch, it won't show.
We have a 70-lb dog and no problems with scratches on our leather sofa. Super easy to clean, too! Would highly recommend leather, as long as you can afford good quality leather.
Leather. When you buy, do a scratch test. There is a wide variety in how easily they scratch, even from high end stores. I originally didn't want leather because it tends to feel cold (I'm easily chilled), but I'm loving how easy ours is to keep clean. Just dust it, wipe with a damp rag if the kid spills something on it.
Leather by far. Good leather couch. It does scratch, but it doesnt look nearly as crappy as a microfiber one. Once those things get wet from them drooling, pee, etc, and you wash it, it starts to look a mess.

Leather is the only choice. I don't have a big dog, I have a small dog, but I also have multiple cats and my leather sectional is pristine at 2 years. I will never have fabric again. Not just how bad fabric is to keep surface-clean, but omg, the smell. Leather all the way.
Leather. Only top-grain. No bonded leather, and no fake leather. Fake leather has a negative charge to it and ATTRACTS pet hair, which is obnoxious. Good leather costs more but it's totally worth it. I clean with Pledge (one of the formulas is ok on leather, look on the back to see which one lists leather as a compatible surface) and both my couches are gorgeous, clean, and non-smelly. After 2 years they look showroom new, which is a nice perk.
ETA: Ditto the scratch test. I remember when we were shopping that one expensive couch had scratches all over it. The store employee rolled his eyes and said to me "yeah customers scratch it, I have NO idea why they do it!" and I thought, wouldn't you want to know if your couch was gonna look like crap after 3 weeks after spending 5k at Restoration Hardware? duh!
