Hi ladies! Posted this on D&R, but didn't realize the board was dead, so....
After moving into our house almost a year ago, we're finally getting around to decorating/furnishing our living room. Last weekend we painted it BM Shaker Gray (reference picture below), which is a fairly dark gray with blue undertones. I'm struggling to figure out what color and style couch to get.
The only pieces of furniture that are definitely being used in there are an antique writing desk and an antique bombe chest, which are both a dark wood (possibly mahogany?). We also have two upholstered chairs that are striped with various shades of grays, taupes, greens and browns that I'd like to use, but it's not a make or break.
So, what would you suggest in terms of both color and style? TIA!!
Is the trim in your room painted white like the inspiration photo? What's on your floors - carpet, wood, color?
I'm usually in favor of getting the main furniture pieces in a neutral color, that way, when you want to redecorate, you can do so without having to buy another sofa. Paint and accessories are cheaper to replace than a sofa.
Personally, I usually buy darker colored sofas, partially because I have a black dog and the dog hair shows less. :-)
As for style, if the other pieces in the room are antique with curvy lines, what about creating some balance with a sofa that has clean lines, something like this? Still classic, but not over-the-top antique looking:

Trim is white, yes. There's carpet on the floor. It's a light beige, but will be replaced at some point in the not too distant future, so I don't really care about that part.
I'm a little concerned about going too light because we have a baby who will eventually be a little boy with dirty hands, but I guess that's the risk you take. Maybe something with a slipcover would make sense, so it's washable?
I do like the look of that couch, definitely my style!
Here's a pic of the writing desk, and you can actually see the wall color, trim, and part of the chairs that I'd like to use.
Love that inspiration room and your desk is lovely! I would go with a slipcovered couch like the one shown. I have a little one and slipcovers on everything, but even still I go 6 months and up on needing to wash. But it's nice to know I can
