$27,790.00 That appears to be just for me since I see no baby related things on the itemization. Pitocin and epidural included. It also does not include the doctor's services. After ins it's only $1,500 thank goodness. That's still going to take us a while to pay off, but that original sum is insane!
It makes me cringe every time someone posts the cost of the delivery. I can't believe how expensive our health care is and that is if there are no issues involved. I am glad you have insurance and the cost OOP will be significantly less for you.
Isn't it insane? My c/s was less than $3000. Total prenatal, l/d, recovery (Thurs-Sun) was around $30,000. The following week(Mon-Fri) in the hospital was around $40,000-$50,000. Each CT was $2000 (I had 3). Way too expensive.
I was really surprised at how low my bill was. Pitocin, epidural, c-section, and DS in the NICU 5 days. Only $16,000 before insurance, $500 after. Hooray for DH's fantastic insurance!

What's terrible is that the insurance company will negotiate it down to about a 3rd of that, but someone w/o insurance would be on the hook for the whole thing.
I was on an injury case jury--this lady had 4 surgeries supposedly as a result of a 10mph rear ending. All these surgeries were out patient--the facility cost was what was unfucking believable. They were all crazy high but the one that stood out most was $59k for one hospital. 1 day, not counting Docs or anything cost more than most people make a year. Total for that surgery was $88k.

Yeah I couldn't agree more. My c-section/hospital stay was $44k and I could not believe that was the bill -- my ins provider only had to pay something around $10k as they too negotiated down. But I could never imagine what I would do had we not had health insurance. My co-pay was amazingly $0!!
I really don't understand medical costs. My c-section was something like $15-17k (including my dr. portion for my whole pregnancy and an 'emergency' charge because it was the middle of the night). My appendectomy which was 2 months later was $32k. I went into the ER and was in the hospital for less than 12 hours total. $32k for 12 hours for an appendectomy and $17k for my c/s and a few days in the hospital... and you know - a baby. My co-pay/deductible was $5400 so I paid that for my c/s and nothing for my appendectomy since i've maxed out this year.
mine was $31k for my c/s, my drug cocktail during labor (several different drugs for different reasons), and DS' care while we were in the hospital. I paid $2800.
My emergency C-section was $39,000. BabyBAMF's NICU stay @ 23 days was $95,000. So far I've paid $450 out of pocket, and I think that's all I owe. Thank you, super-expensive health insurance!!! You were totally worth all those years I never needed you!

I had a 28 day stay in the hospital on bedrest and then two previous stays of 3 nights and 1 night. The room and board alone, not counting anything medical, was over $50K, so over $1k per night. I never even saw the total bill for the daily OB and MFM visits, u/s, lab work, etc. And, my case was pretty uncomplicated. I was just there to make sure I relaxed as much as possible.
I didn't pay anything b/c I'd previously reached my OOP max of $2K due to some physical therapy earlier in the year (for a non-pregnancy related knee injury).

my friend negotiated $4500 total for a cs. She has zero maternity.

This is me. We have no maternity coverage thanks to our crappy private health insurance plan. We knew this before getting pg and are prepared to pay the bill, but it totally sucks. We are eligible for a 20% "uninsured" discount and can get another 20% off if we pay within 30 days.

I don't think this is true. Most places also give cash discounts and have other breaks for uninsured patients. I'm really not sure who ever pays the full price.

Call and pre negotiate. My friend was prepared to change hospitals for the best deal. She got over 70 percent off and it's all in writing.

Your little one is adorable BTW.
Really. I did a med free birth and my son was perfectly healthy and it was still about 14k when it was all said and done. Hell, they wanted to charge me $50 just for having a telephone and a tv in my room (that I didn't even use)
