We just stayed at Hotel Bourdonnais. I think it was on the higher end of your range (maybe $200?) but it was available last minute and in a great location. There were lots of hotels in the area, but I planned only about 10 days in advance, so few had rooms.
We stayed at an apt via vrbo.com, not sure if you'd consider that, but we liked it.
My sister stayed at Londress Eiffel Hotel by herself this spring after my SIL/BIL stayed there last yr and rec'd it. I recommend staying in the 7th or 6th Arros; but that's just my personal preference! It's close to a lot of tourist spots and as long as you're near a metro, anything is easily accessible.

Aww, tjen, I'm sorry to hear that. I'm glad you'll be taking what sounds like an awesome trip, though, and if a handsome Parisian wines and dines you, so much the better

A musician I know in NY highly reco'd Mama Shelter to me when we came to Paris in the fall house-hunting. (He comes here on tour a lot.) We ultimately decided to rent an apartment, but ever since then I've seen a bunch of hype about Mama Shelter in different French magazines/press. Apparently, they just opened a location in Marseille and are expanding soon to Istanbul and some other cities outside France. So, based on all this, I'd say go for it if the rate is decent.
It's in a neighborhood that's kind of off the touristy-sites grid (the 11th), but you do have good food and night life options there. And of course, as someone else mentioned, nowhere is particularly far in Paris on the metro.
