We switched when we moved Kid 2 into the toddler bed. Then we bought Kid 1 a mattress and it's on the floor. Someday we'll have bunk beds but they're too young right now.
We went straight from the crib to a twin bed with a rail. The rail got broken around 3.5 so he's been straight twin for close to a year. Only a few accidents.
We switched when we moved at age 3.5. We rented a furnished apartment that had a regular twin-sized bed in the room that became DD's and it totally worked for her at the time. We had considered buying one of IKEA's junior beds if it didn't. (They're a little bigger than toddler beds and is what DD was sleeping in before we moved.)

We plan on switching around 4. I think I'm going to redo her whole room for her birthday. We would've switched sooner if I got pregnant to use the crib, but it hasn't happened for us yet.
At 2 yrs 3 mos, when we moved and before Dd2 arrived since we just used the crib without the front as the toddler bed. Not sure when we'll do it with Dd2. Probably when Dd1 is ready to be on a top bunk since they share a room.
