In the randoms thread the other day, I said how my company was making everyone bill 40 extra hours between now and the end of the year to make up for the week we were off for Sandy. I told my boss I couldn't do it, since I'm out of the house for more than 11 hours most days as it is, and I only see my 3-month old 2 hours a day.
Anyway, my boss met with HR on my behalf, explained my case and asked what would happen if people were unable to put in those 40 hours. The short answer is, they don't know yet. AND they probably won't figure it out until the books close for this year and they see what the "damage" is.
But, my boss also talked to the VP in charge of my division, and they both agree that any extra time I can bill would be helpful, but they don't want me to worry about making up the 40 hours or to get upset worrying about the situation. The exact phrase was "We have your back."
So... I still don't know how it's all going to shake out, but I feel better about it. I might try to go in early a couple days each week as a show of good faith. But that really depends on my sleep situation
I generally can't work from home... the nature of my job is I literally get handed a folder, do my thing, and pass it on. But if the timing works out on certain projects, it might be possible. That timing is out of my control though. We'll see...
I remember your OP, I admired your cojones for saying no. What they're doing still sounds manipulative to me. They make this outrageous demand about making up the time, and when you push back, they say they've "got your back" thereby guilting you into working more hours! They accomplished their original objective. I'm so sorry you're dealing with this, they suck.
Is the work time sensitive or have you missed deadlines due to the hurricane? It is just mind boggling to me that they want you to make up time and not take off time for holidays after you suffered through a natural disaster. Talk about treating your employees like shit.
I do like my job, which is sort of the problem! I could SAH... But I'm not sure that's really for me Ok, I take it back, I'm almost positive it's not for me. But I could do it if I had to
It's not so much the missed deadlines as the missed revenue... You have 350 people times 40 hours of billing per person = a lot of money.
Again, I know it's not my boss -- he found out about this the same time we did, and I know he's not happy about it either. It's just some accountant somewhere looking at an earnings report.
I just think it's shady to not tell us the consequences now. It could be nothing. It could be that I have to use 5 PTO days for that week. It could be that they say "see ya'" although my boss said he didn't think he consequences would be that dire (but again, he doesn't know).
And the 2 am thing was a lot easier when there wasn't a cute little monkey face waiting for me at home
Yeah that is b.s.! I hope a lot of other people raise hell about it and they tell everyone they don't have to make it up. Sorry you have to deal with that.
