DD will most likely start using CDs in January, as she'll hopefully be big enough to fitcomfortably into her OS pockets by then (and daycare will allow - yay!). She is a skinny thing, so I would like to make her diapers as trim as possible - looking into getting some hemp inserts to help with that and just for general absorbancy.
My stash is small but I will slowly add to it over the next month. I only have OS and I would like to keep it that way for now. I have some Kawaii, Fuzzi Bunz OS, Happy Heinys, and Bumgenius 4.0. Are there other brands that are generally trim?
What size hemp inserts would you get for OS pockets? I was looking at Babykicks Hemparoo Joeybunz - regular ($5.27) vs premium ($6.37)...OR Thirsties hemp inserts (2-pack for $9).
Also - will using dryer sheets leave a residue in my dryer and cause my diapers to repel, even if I don't use the sheets with my CDs?
As a side note - why do they make fitted with adorable patterns when they require a cover? dumb.
Thanks, Starry...I'm sure she can fit into most of the diapers I have now - they just seem so ginormous looking at them... and I'm mostly being lazy and waiting until I have a paycheck again before DH sees a bunch of transactions from Kelly's Closet. My stash is too small at this point for me to want to use them and do wash constantly. I only have about 7 diapers so far.
I use both the Thirsties and the Joey Bunz hemp (I use the large ones, they shrink to the same length as a bumgenius insert). The large Thirsties shrink even smaller.. Probably the size of the bumgenius newborn insert.
I use Thirsties as a daytime doubler with a microfiber insert. They are pretty thin, cheap, and get the job done. I never have leaks.
I use Joeys as my overnight doubler. They are by far the most absorbent and thinnest insert I've used. If it made sense financially, I'd use nothing but these inserts.
The Joeys are actually two sheets sewn together with just a few stitches at one end. I use both layers for my little guy, but a single layer for DD since she's getting closer to potty training and not super wet overnight anymore.
I love the Thirsties hemp inserts. DD is on the middle rise of her BG 4.0s and the large size is perfect. I have a couple Joey Bunz and they work well, too, but I think the Thirsties are more absorbant. However, I don't have the type of Joey Bunz that are two liners sewn together- mine are just one.

Do you use them by themselves or with MF? I need to get some hemp; we're starting to out-pee MF (making do with NB doubles but it is getting tight)
Kawaii bamboo is fine. Very trim, but I find I have to either use 2 or pair it with a MF. I really don't mind my MF. I've been using it for a year and a half and it's still functional.
My favorite inserts are actually the MF/Bamboo 4 layer inserts from Alva. 2 of those work overnight for us.
You definitely get used to the size of cloth. I think DS looks funny when we use disposables and he doesn't have a booty.

I have been using just hemp in all my pockets for months. I don't get any leaks with BG 4.0s, but sometimes I do with Blueberries. I saved all of the BG newborn MF inserts and I'm planning to add those as a booster soon because DD is really starting to pee a lot.
From my experience, the bulkiness really get easier when your baby is large enough for the one sized diapers to be fully unsnapped and you're not folding any of the inserts.
I started CDs when DD was about a year old, so the one sized pockets worked great, even with doublers! I bought a prefold newborn stash for DS, and even when he was big enough to fit in the snapped down one sized pockets, I wasn't a fan, probably for the same reasons you aren't. The diapers were the size of him! I felt like I was really stretching out onesies and how was he ever going to roll over?
I saw two options, buy sized pockets or more prefolds in the larger sizes.
And so I bought 2 dozen more prefolds - one dozen yellow edge and the one dozen wide (DS is a chunk.. Same length as the red edge, just wider).
I used prefolds with one sized covers till DS fit into the unsnapped large setting pockets, which was right around the time he really started flipping around, making prefolds more difficult anyway. Prefolds are really trim and absorbent. I never needed doublers, but I did use the fleece liners to help keep the wetness directly off his skin.
