I want to stock up on some basic layette items during the Carter's sale, but am unsure of what types of items to buy for the season this baby will be arriving. Is it crazy to put a baby in footed sleepers in the middle of summer? Or, would it be better to order these in a 3 month size (or larger) for the colder months? Should I be buying short sleeved onesies; or will a baby be too cold and need long sleeves?
If any other summer moms (especially those who had babies in late June or early July) can chime in to let me know what items you would recommend for the first few months, I would greatly appreciate it!
We live in Minnesota - typical summer weather is hot and humid until mid-September.
Do you have air conditioning? You need to dress the baby for where the baby will be, not necessarily the outdoor temperature. If you keep the house below 75, I'd keep the baby in footed sleepers for the first few weeks. If you don't have A/C, then I'd stick to onesies.
My July baby wore footed sleepers since the day he was born and still does. Zipper ones were way better for me than the snaps. When fall started I put onesies underneath them and transitioned to fleece ones.
Dd wore creepers or footie pjs (Carter's calls them sleep and plays I think) for her first months. I think the creepers/rompers are usually more stylized and "outfitish" so you may want to hold off on them until you know the sex. Sleepers/footie pjs are always useful. I know some people were saying 3 pair, but I could go through that in a day. I'd want 7ish.
Eta: I have never understood onesie love. Anything that doesn't have to go over a newborn's head is my favorite.

Ds was born at the end of June in fl so the ac is always on. He lived in onesies and socks and the lighter pjs (no fleece, etc). He hardly ever spit up back then so we didn't change him more than once a day. Don't go overboard.
We live in TX. Baby wears footed PJ's year round. Cotton ones in the summer and fleece in the winter. LO was born in May and spent 3 weeks in the NICU. As soon as he was discharged the summer temps reach 100+ degrees and stayed there until mid September.
That first summer we kept him in short sleeved cotton onsies at home and onsie and shorts when he went out. Or we put him in T-shirt shorts matching sets. Even though it was really hot out there is A/C at home, A/C in the car and A/C inside whatever building we were going to so he was just fine in a top with shorts.
The first winter I really loved those carters 3 piece sets with fleece long pants, long sleeve cotton onsies and zip up hoodie. He had a million of those. They were great b/c on warmer winter days I could unzip the hoodie and he could wear the long sleeve onsie with fleece pants and on colder days he could wear all 3.
DD wears long-sleeved footed sleepers year round. Cotton most of the time, fleece if it's really chilly. When she was a newborn, she was swaddled in an A&A blanket, so I just put her in a long-sleeved onesie.
I LOVE the Carter's onesies with the fold over sleeves to tuck in their hands. Those are great to keep newborns from scratching their faces. Also love footed pants.

DH refuses to put them over her head. Instead he pulls them up through her bottom. I think that is a bigger PITA but to each their own.
How on earth do he manage this? FTR, my DH SUCKS massively at putting on a onesie...even worse taking them off! Poor kid gets all tangled up every damn time.

Same. My kid came in June and wore footed sleepers basically everyday until he turned one. At which point I realized he probably needed actual clothing.
For my summer baby we used mostly onesies during the day and old navy footed things for bedtime (link bellow). These are very light and breath nicely which is the prefect for summer or for a hot baby. We also swaddled in a muslin blanket most of the early months.
FWIW my older child who was a winter baby wore a onesie most nights and would sometimes sleep in just a diaper and once slept naked in her baby bathtub after crying due to overheating. She has always been a hot person and even now doesn't really use a blanket. Just want to throw it out there that you never really know what you'll use or won't use but you'll figure it out --- we all do.
