I have bought almost all of DD's clothes since she was born. I think I got a couple of outfits at my shower, but it wasn't much. I haven't been given any hand-me-downs.

I did not buy much at first because my son was the first baby on my side and the first in a long time on the other. I have four boys, so I try to buy higher quality stuff when it is on clearance a season ahead. I am starting to have to buy things for my fourth son, because after three boys a lot is ruined.

I love to shop for my kids' clothes, but their needs have varied. Both had plenty of newborn and infant clothes gifted and handed down. Once DS was a toddler, he needed more, but he's small and doesn't grow fast, and now that he's in school, he wears a school shirt, so we're back to him not needing that much. DD is, of course, more fun to shop for, but she's showing an opinion on her clothes already (her brother could care less), so my shopping days are numbered.
Once or twice a year I fill in the gaps of our handmedowns by going to a consignment sale. We are lucky to get super nice hand me downs, and tons of them. I love not having to deal with buying clothes for the kid.

We have never gotten hand-me-downs and were Team Green for DD (thus not much in the way of gifted clothing), so I've had to buy pretty much everything. I don't really find much that I like so she has a smallish wardrobe. I'd say half of it comes from consignment stores or garage sales, and the other half is stuff from Target or Old Navy.
Believe it or not but some people do not get gifts of clothing, or get gifts that don't work out (wrong season, wrong sizes etc).
For the first year of my daughter's life I didn't have to buy much -- I didn't receive that many gifts at my shower but I did get a huge box of hand-me downs for a neighbor. I now buy stuff every season for the kids.
I haven't bought a ton for my second, but between me, my mom and my MIL, DS1 had an out of control wardrobe, all the way to jammies. When I was organizing DS2's clothes in the spring, I counted 30(!) pairs of pajamas in size 12 months (MIL had a jammy buying problem). But, I loved to get them clothes as well, and now when I do buy, I like to get the boys coordinating outfits that they can wear when we're out. I don't want them to match, but I do want them to go together. I also have a problem, and hate doing laundry, so I have enough clothes that if I go two weeks without doing their laundry there are still enough clothes for them to wear, so I each has at least 10 pairs of pants and 20 shirts to make sure we have enough. It's a sickness. Although, I do always buy on sale. I love it when Crazy8 has their huge sale and I get last season's clothes 75% off.
We got zero hand me downs as G has mostly boy cousins. All the clothes from showers were 0-3. So i buy stuff on sale and at consignment sales in sept/march
I like buying him clothes every now and then only b/c I feel like I missed out on the cute infant stuff. We were very lucky and was gifted a lot of clothes so we didn't need anything for a long time.
I buy WAY too much. I am DONE buying clothes until next spring. Then it's only a few outfits because my Mom and MIL will give him tons of stuff, plus he has an older cousin he gets hand me downs from. I am so sad that a lot of the outfits I bought him got put away with tags still on them.
At DD's shower, pretty much everything we got was 0-6 months. We were the only ones of our friends to have a kid, and have only recently made new friends with kids that can be a hand-me-down source. Our family is VERY small, so MIL & my parents buy her some stuff, as does SIL for holidays. But MIL has horrendous taste, and I'm fairly picky about what DD wears (no words, no characters, stuff like that), so she pretty much only wears MIL's stuff at MIL's house. I have bought the vast majority of DD's clothes.
I'm cheap, though, so I buy Old Navy, Target, major sales, and consignment stuff a lot.

i used to - when i only had DS1 - i shopped almost exclusivly at consignment - i loved the bargains i'd get on really expensive clothing!! It was hard to pass cute stuff up!
then i had the twins and i only got them stuff that matched - and now, that i don't match them anymore- i rarely buy them anything (they get DS1's hand me downs)... and only buy dS1 stuff when he outgrows clothes.
boy clothign is pretty much the same year after year -so the fun of it has worn off on me

I rarely buy clothes for the kids. My MIL buys SO many clothes for them at garage sales throughout the summer and then my mom buys them even more at Christmas and their birthdays. We literally have bins of clothes for them in our basement and their closet is jammed full. We make out pretty well
My hand me down sources are a moving target! The first round actually came from kimi on here (because she's awesome). I have a nephew who is 3, but they've given us only a little. I bought a few boxes for the big baby sizes, and now my cousin gifted me a whole bunch of 2-3-4T sizes.
You never know what will shake out once the baby is actually around. I don't have anyone that will definitely give me anything, but I've received a lot.

Totally agree. I have no family or close friends with kids and never expected any hand-me-downs. A random coworker I barely know ended up offering me her DD's clothes and I got a shitton from her. Not great quality or condition, but I'm not picky.
Yes, even though I say I will cut back. We didn't get many gifted to us and didn't have a good hand me down source til 2 years. Now we get a small bag in summer and winter with usually some pjs, pants and a few t-shirts. DS's favorite pair of pajamas ever were 3rd round hand me downs (fleece Lego Star Wars) and my friend at work usually asks if DS would like specific items like a Cars coat or snow boots.
Most of DS's clothes are Target Circo and then some special ones from Gymboree or Crazy 8. I pass down most of them to his friend that is a year younger, saving favorites. I know his parents love getting them as I see him in DS's old clothes at daycare all the time. He pretty much got a full daycare wardrobe last time I gave them clothes. I was just glad to get rid of them.
If I need a specific specialty item I've asked on our work classifieds. I was looking for some ice skates to buy used last year and someone I didn't even know had them and gave me them. I gave them to another coworker last week.
