Knowing that my parents aren't big Romney fans, I asked my mom a few minutes ago how they feel about Mittens almost certainly getting the R nomination. Oops. I learned that my mom believes that President Obama is covertly forming alliances with the US's enemies, that he himself is not American, and that his mission is to destroy our country.
Eep.
Now I'm off to try to erase my memory of this conversation...

I'm always surprised at people who are rather normal, rational, people who come from parents like this - not your mom's ideals, but that she is convinced of conspiracy theories and half-lies as being truth. They should study you kids to see how that happens.
No, in fact she hates FOX News and.pundits in general. Clearly she's not in need of their help!
My mom is super-conservative, to the point of believing that the US is a Christian nation and should be governed accordingly. My dad seems to be swinging more Libertarian these days. We pretty much could not have more different social and political viewpoints.
Still, this morning's conversation was a revelation.

My dad and I routinely email back and forth about political topics trying to persuade one another even though it's futile.
The part that cracks me up the most is that he always sends me opinion pieces from right-wing sources which at some point always refer to Obama as a socialist (although I've never heard him jump on the birther bandwagon). I, however, try to be better than that and usually send him articles with facts from non-partisan sources whenever possible. He always dismisses the facts because according to him, the source may say it's non-partisan but of course it must be liberal.
So it's perfectly okay to send me these op-eds written by right-wing fanatics with no facts at all and call it gospel, but my non-partisan facts are just "liberal media bias"? Um, okay, Dad.
My poor dad wonders what went "wrong" with my brother and me.
